South Korea's First Won-Backed Stablecoin Enters the Global Payments Arena
South Korea's won-backed stablecoin, $KRW1, is taking its first major step toward international adoption through a new integration with @raincards. Businesses can now issue won-denominated cards accepted at over 175 million Visa merchant points worldwide, bringing the Korean won into the global digital payments landscape in a meaningful way.
The stablecoin runs on the @Avax blockchain, chosen for its speed, security, and recognition by Korea's Internet and Security Agency for reliability in public-sector applications. BDACS built out a full-stack framework covering issuance, management, and transaction verification, positioning $KRW1 as potential infrastructure for remittances, cross-border payments, and even government disbursement programs.
Raincards Unlocks Global Merchant Reach for $KRW1
The integration with @raincards is what gives $KRW1 its global reach. Rain is a Visa principal member and global card issuing platform built natively for stablecoins. As a Visa principal member, Rain sponsors card programs end-to-end without relying on traditional bank partners, giving fintech platforms and businesses full control over their card programs. Rain's cards are compatible with Google Pay and Apple Pay and work across Visa's global acceptance network.
For $KRW1, this means businesses can now offer won-denominated spend cards usable at Visa-accepting merchants across the world. The integration effectively removes the geographic restrictions that have historically contained the Korean won, connecting South Korea's broad money supply to international commerce through blockchain infrastructure.
The move reflects broader momentum around local-currency stablecoins in Asia. South Korea's government has signaled support for won-pegged digital assets as part of its digital finance strategy, and $KRW1 is among the first to move from proof-of-concept to real-world payment utility.
