- ZRO has more than doubled since mid-September inside a steady rising channel.
- The rally has reached the price zone where February’s rally on Citadel and ARK backing ran out of steam.
- A monthly unlock for strategic partners and core contributors lands on October 20.
- Lighter breakout volume and fading momentum point to consolidation risk near resistance.
LayerZero’s ZRO token traded near $2.32 on Monday after a four-hour breakout carried it as high as $2.434 before sellers trimmed the move, leaving the token up about 14% over 24 hours and 17.6% over the week. At that level ZRO, valued at roughly $927 million, sits more than 150% above its September 15 low near $0.92 and back inside the band where its February rally stalled after Citadel Securities and ARK Invest disclosed ZRO purchases, eight days before 23.63 million new tokens are scheduled for release.
The October 10 dip that set up Monday’s breakout
Since mid-September, ZRO has climbed inside a rising channel in which every pullback found buyers higher than the last. The exponential moving averages, which weight recent closing prices more heavily, are stacked in bullish order, with the 9-period EMA at $2.22, the 50-period at $2.05 and the 200-period at $1.65. The 50 EMA was already above the 200 EMA in late August, nearly met it between September 13 and 17, then reclaimed and accelerated away from it around September 18-19, re-confirming a trend already in place. The October 9-10 pullback tested that structure and held the 0.382 Fibonacci retracement near $1.88-$1.90, the point where a market has surrendered about 38% of its advance, right where the lower channel line met the 50 EMA. The bounce from that confluence launched Monday’s move, although a price roughly 40% above the 200 EMA also shows how stretched the trend has become.

Why buyers thinned out above $2.40
Volume surged from September 22 to October 9, through both the advance and the shakeout, yet the push to $2.434 came on noticeably lighter activity, and Monday’s breakout candle left a long upper wick as price slid back toward $2.31. The relative strength index has cooled to about 62 from 75 at the high while staying above its signal line near 55. Its recent peaks, at about 72 on October 7 and 75 on Monday, sit below the reading near 80 from late September even as price set higher highs, Traders read that mild bearish divergence as a sign that each push draws less buying force, which favors consolidation over another leg higher.
February’s Citadel and ARK spike died at the same $2.50 wall
In February, LayerZero Labs unveiled Zero, a Layer 1 blockchain built for institutional trading and settlement, and said Citadel Securities and ARK Invest had bought ZRO, with ARK also taking equity in LayerZero Labs and Cathie Wood joining its advisory board. Citadel’s move stood out because the market maker usually backs crypto companies such as Kraken and Ripple through equity and rarely buys tokens. ZRO jumped about 40% toward $2.50 on the news, then gave most of it back within a week, and the $2.40-$2.60 zone has turned ZRO back repeatedly since 2025. LayerZero’s fall 2026 launch target for Zero puts the network’s debut inside the current rally’s window.
ARK’s September 3 report, published while the firm holds both ZRO and LayerZero Labs equity, found that LayerZero products handled 44% of cross-chain volume in the first half of 2026, ahead of 41% for Circle’s Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol, within a defined set of cross-chain mechanisms. LayerZeroScan shows $13.31 billion moved over the past 30 days and $309.2 billion over the protocol’s lifetime, up from the roughly $280 billion ARK counted through June, although the same stablecoins can cross networks repeatedly, so these totals track usage far more than fees reaching ZRO holders.

According to DefiLlama, about 23.63 million ZRO unlock on October 20 at approximately 05:33 UTC, split between 13 million for strategic partners and 10.63 million for core contributors. The batch equals 2.36% of the 1 billion maximum supply and roughly 28% of Monday’s $193.6 million in 24-hour volume, while CoinGecko and Tokenomics.com count other allocations and list 25.71 million and 31.25 million tokens respectively.
How much of that reaches the market depends on recipients, which is why LayerZero’s buyback record matters. The company repurchased 50 million ZRO from early investors in September 2025, cutting the monthly strategic-partner unlock from 15 million to about 12.7 million tokens, and had deployed $112.7 million into buybacks by June. On May 31, investors still held 63.8% of their 134.7 million unlocked tokens, selling about 4.9 million a month, a pattern set before a rally that has more than doubled the profit on every unlocked token.

The April decline also overlapped with the April 18 KelpDAO rsETH exploit, a roughly $292 million attack on a LayerZero-verified bridge that LayerZero blamed on Kelp’s single-verifier setup and Kelp blamed on LayerZero’s own defaults, and the losing streak only gave way to gains in August and September, while Tokenomics.com’s data records price moves around those dates without showing that the unlocks caused them.
$2.48 decides whether October 20 meets a breakout or a retest
A four-hour close above $2.48 on expanding volume would clear the February ceiling and expose the upper channel near $2.60-$2.65, then the -0.272 Fibonacci extension around $2.90, which projects the rally 27.2% beyond its September-October range. Rejection there points to a retest of $2.05-$2.15, likely in the days leading into the unlock. A four-hour close below $2.05 would be the first channel break since September, and losing $1.88 opens a deeper retracement toward the 0.5 level near $1.70.
Monthly releases run until May 2027, which shifts attention to the fee side. Stargate revenue already funds ZRO repurchases, and under the proposed ATLAS design, 75% of trading fees left after venue rebates would go to buybacks and burns, so ATLAS volumes will show how much of each future unlock LayerZero can absorb itself.
