What to Know

  • Ledger investigators discovered an unauthorized hardware component inside an affected wallet linked to the CryptoBilis security incident in Southeast Asia.

  • CryptoBilis suspended hardware wallet sales while Ledger works with affected customers and law enforcement to investigate the suspected security breaches.

  • Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès independently identified suspicious wallet modifications, raising concerns about possible tampering before customer delivery.

Crypto hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger has confirmed the discovery of an unauthorized electronic component inside a customer device linked to an ongoing investigation into suspected cryptocurrency thefts.

According to Ledger’s October 10 update, investigators identified the rogue hardware inside a wallet associated with CryptoBilis, an authorized reseller operating in Southeast Asia.

The discovery represents the first confirmed physical evidence of hardware tampering in the investigation, although investigators have not established whether the modification caused the reported thefts.

Ledger Identifies Unauthorized Hardware Inside Customer Wallet

Ledger’s investigation revealed that the suspicious component had been inserted into an affected device, raising concerns about potential interference with hardware wallet communications. The suspected attack reportedly involved intercepting communication between internal wallet components and the display rather than directly compromising the secure element responsible for protecting private keys.

Such modifications could potentially expose sensitive transaction information or manipulate what users see when authorizing cryptocurrency transfers. Meanwhile, CryptoBilis has suspended hardware wallet sales as a precaution while investigators determine the extent of the incident.

Ledger continues coordinating with affected customers and law enforcement authorities to identify those responsible and establish whether additional devices were compromised. Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès has independently examined evidence of suspected hardware modifications found inside Ledger wallets.

In an October 10 X post, Karpelès confirmed identifying suspicious components through photographs provided by affected customers. The former exchange executive also encouraged individuals possessing potentially compromised devices to submit them for further technical examination.

Investigation Raises Concerns About Hardware Wallet Supply Chains

Karpelès subsequently dismantled one suspicious electronic component to investigate its construction and potential capabilities. An earlier examination involved a Ledger Nano X reportedly obtained from Malaysia, where an unauthorized component was discovered despite apparently intact shrink-wrap packaging.

The findings raise questions about possible supply-chain interference, particularly whether devices could have been modified before reaching customers. Nevertheless, investigators have not confirmed how many wallets were affected or whether the discovered components directly facilitated cryptocurrency thefts.

The investigation remains ongoing, with further technical findings expected to clarify the suspected attack mechanism and potential exposure of affected users.
