@Ledger has added native shielded @Zcash support to Ledger Wallet Desktop, letting users manage private $ZEC balances directly from Ledger's own software with every transaction confirmed on the hardware device itself.
The shielded balance display covers only $ZEC held in the Ironwood pool, the new shielded pool that went live on July 28, 2026, as part of the NU6.3 network upgrade. Ironwood replaced the older Orchard pool after researchers discovered a flaw in Orchard's zero-knowledge proof circuit that could have theoretically allowed counterfeit $ZEC to be created without leaving an on-chain trace. The new pool features formally verified proof circuits and quantum-resilient record-keeping, offering stronger security guarantees than its predecessor.
Zcash uses zero-knowledge proofs to encrypt transaction details, hiding the sender, receiver, and amount while still letting the network confirm a transaction is valid. Prior to recent updates, Ledger's Zcash capabilities were limited to transparent transactions, with only partial deshielding support added later, leaving a meaningful gap for privacy-focused holders who store $ZEC in cold storage.
The integration comes with an important deadline. Ledger will remove the older Zondax-built Zcash Shielded app from download on November 5, 2026. Holders who currently use that app need to migrate their funds before that date to avoid disruption.
The timing matters given how quickly funds have been moving into Ironwood since its activation. The new pool has already attracted millions of $ZEC from users migrating out of the legacy Orchard pool, which is now restricted to withdrawals only under a turnstile mechanism that caps outflows to verifiable deposits.
Bringing shielded support natively into Ledger's own app removes the reliance on third-party tooling and keeps the signing process within the Ledger device, which is the security model most hardware wallet users expect from the outset.
