The Linux Foundation has completed the operational launch of the x402 Foundation, placing Coinbase’s internet-native payment protocol under formal open governance with 40 financial, technology and blockchain organizations.

Coinbase contributed the x402 protocol after developing the initial governing body with Cloudflare and Stripe. The Linux Foundation will provide a vendor-neutral structure where developers, payment companies, financial institutions and cloud providers can shape its technical development without control resting with one company or blockchain.

x402 embeds payments inside normal HTTP interactions. An AI agent, application or API requesting a paid resource can receive an HTTP 402 “Payment Required” response, complete the requested transaction and retry the request without opening an account, purchasing prepaid credits or moving through a separate checkout page. The standard can support payment methods ranging from traditional cards to stablecoins.

AWS, Google And Payment Giants Join Crypto Networks

Premier members include AWS, Google, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Stripe, Adyen, Fiserv, Shopify, Circle, Coinbase, Cloudflare, MoonPay, Ripple, Monad Foundation, Solana Foundation and Stellar Development Foundation.

NEAR Foundation joined as a general member alongside Fireblocks, Injective, KakaoPay, LayerZero Labs, Polygon Labs, Quant Network, SKALE, World Liberty Financial and Zerohash. Cardano Foundation, Casper, BSV Association, OMA3 and the Japanese Contents Blockchain Initiative entered as associate members.

The membership brings card networks, merchant processors, cloud infrastructure providers and public blockchain organizations into the same standards body. Ripple already supports x402 payments using XRP and RLUSD, while Circle is positioning USDC as a settlement asset for agent-to-API transactions. Solana Foundation is working on permissionless payment rails capable of handling automated, pay-per-request activity.

Agentic Payment Activity Accelerates

The operational launch follows rapid growth in automated crypto payments. Coinbase put cumulative x402 activity above 160 million agentic payments in June, while earlier onchain analysis tracked more than 100 million transactions on Basethrough the first quarter of 2026.

Coinbase has also connected the protocol to its broader AI strategy. Its recently launched Coinbase for Agents gives approved assistants access to account-based trading workflows and is being prepared for x402 payments covering data, compute, research and other online services.

The x402 network recorded 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million in payment volume over the latest 30-day period, involving roughly 94,060 buyers and 22,000 sellers.
