Lucid Group (LCID) shares experienced a notable surge Thursday after the electric vehicle manufacturer revealed a strategic collaboration with Bolt, a leading European ride-sharing platform, to bring autonomous ride services to cities across the continent. The stock climbed as high as 5.5% in early trading.

The agreement calls for Bolt to introduce a minimum of 25,000 fully autonomous Lucid vehicles in key European metropolitan areas. These vehicles will be constructed on Lucid’s yet-to-launch Midsize platform and will incorporate Nvidia’s Hyperion autonomous-vehicle technology, a comprehensive system that merges powerful computing capabilities with an integrated sensor array.

The collaboration is designed to achieve SAE Level 4 autonomous capability. This classification enables vehicles to function entirely independently, without driver involvement, in specific operational areas and under particular conditions.

Bolt’s participation extends beyond simple fleet deployment. The company will contribute throughout the entire development cycle, from initial design to full commercial launch. This includes establishing vehicle specifications, software architecture, safety protocols, and passenger experience standards. Additionally, Bolt will construct the necessary infrastructure and forge municipal partnerships to facilitate widespread deployment, while maintaining direct ownership and operational control of the entire fleet.

Lucid has created a new Lucid Technologies division to oversee its portion of this initiative. This unit consolidates the company’s artificial intelligence, advanced driver-assistance systems, autonomy development, and digital capabilities into a single operational structure.

Growing Competition in European Autonomous Transport

This partnership arrives amid intensifying competition within Europe’s self-driving vehicle sector. Last August, Uber, Verne, and Pony.ai introduced robotaxi services in Zagreb. Meanwhile, Waymo, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Alphabet, is actively conducting trials in Munich with plans to launch commercial operations in Germany by the end of 2027.

Bolt has established an ambitious long-term objective of incorporating 100,000 self-driving vehicles into its transportation network by 2035. This 25,000-unit commitment with Lucid represents the initial major milestone toward achieving that vision.

Both organizations indicated they will collaborate closely with autonomous-driving technology providers, European regulatory bodies, and government officials to facilitate smooth implementation.

Lucid Expands on Existing American Robotaxi Agreement

This marks the second major autonomous vehicle collaboration for Lucid’s emerging robotaxi business. The automaker previously established a partnership in the United States with Uber and autonomous technology developer Nuro. That arrangement involves Uber deploying a minimum of 35,000 Lucid vehicles, encompassing both the Gravity SUV and future Midsize platform models, with deliveries beginning this year.

The Bolt partnership follows a similar framework but is tailored specifically for European markets, where regulatory frameworks and operational demands present distinct challenges compared to American markets.

Both parties emphasized that the European initiative will require extensive coordination with regional regulators and government officials, recognizing the additional complexity of navigating diverse regulations across multiple nations.

The newly established Lucid Technologies division will centralize the company’s autonomy research and artificial intelligence capabilities to simultaneously support both the American and European robotaxi programs moving forward.
