SMBC Nikko Securities, Japan's third-largest brokerage firm, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Uniswap Labs, Base, and Nyx Foundation to offer access to decentralized finance services.First conceptualized by SMBC Nikko and Nethermind in March 2026, the initiative has since expanded to incorporate global protocols.
How the DeFi Gateway Works
The project will use @Uniswap v4 hooks to embed AML, CFT, and investor protections at the liquidity pool level, with Base handling deployment and x402 integration, and Nethermind leading engineering, AI, and smart contract security. The compliance layer rests on a mechanism Uniswap Labs introduced with Permissioned Pools, a v4 hook standard that checks issuer-managed allowlists before approved wallets can swap or provide liquidity, enforcing compliance rules at the pool level rather than through a website or offchain check.
The "DeFi Gateway" will embed anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing controls directly into on-chain liquidity pools, allowing SMBC Nikko to manage allowlists of permissioned participants. This means KYC and suitability criteria are enforced at the smart contract layer, a meaningful step toward meeting Japanese regulatory requirements for investor protection within a decentralized architecture.
Regulatory Oversight and Timeline
Progress will be reported to Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA), though no product has yet been approved or launched. The MOU between SMBC Nikko Securities, Nethermind, Uniswap Labs, Base, and Nyx Foundation was signed on October 2, 2026, with the Japan-focused DeFi Gateway targeted for completion by mid-2027.
The deal marks one of the more concrete examples of a major traditional securities house committing to a decentralized protocol for regulated secondary market activity. For @Uniswap, the agreement is a real-world test of whether v4 hooks can serve as compliance tooling for institutional and regulated markets beyond their existing permissionless use cases.
