Ceasefire Extension Eases Geopolitical Pressure

The White House and Iranian leadership have reached an agreement to extend the ongoing 60-day ceasefire, as reported by Al Arabiya. The deal, brokered with the involvement of regional mediators, puts a temporary pause on further naval activity in the Persian Gulf and has delivered an immediate jolt to global markets.

The ceasefire extension comes under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which both sides signed on June 17 to launch negotiations toward a permanent agreement. The latest extension was confirmed ahead of the August 17 deadline, with Pakistani government sources telling Anadolu Agency that "both sides have conveyed their consent to the mediators."

The Strait of Hormuz has sat at the centre of the conflict's economic fallout. Before the war, the strait handled roughly 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas, making any disruption there a direct pressure point on energy prices worldwide.

Oil Falls, Crypto Sentiment Improves

The ceasefire news triggered an immediate drop of $5.20 per barrel in Brent Crude. That reaction follows a well-established pattern: Brent surged nearly 64% from pre-conflict levels to a peak of $120 in early March when the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed, and prices have remained elevated throughout the conflict.

The move is broadly constructive for crypto. Earlier in the conflict, the initial ceasefire announcement sent crypto assets and stock indices sharply higher while oil fell. Analysts have noted that $BTC has been sensitive to each twist in the conflict: Bitcoin dropped more than 2% on June 8 when the two sides traded their heaviest strikes, underlining how directly geopolitical risk has fed into digital asset prices.

With tensions easing again, risk appetite across equities and crypto could firm up in the near term. Diplomatic progress, particularly any steps toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz, would further reduce the energy supply premium that has weighed on broader market sentiment since February.
