It is that time of the year again.

McDonald's is bringing back its McRib sandwich to select restaurants across the U.S. beginning Oct. 27 and fans are already losing their cool.

Interestingly, McRib's story starts with chicken instead of pork.

McDonald's first executive chef René Arend developed Chicken McNuggets in 1979. They were such a hit that suppliers could not produce enough chicken to keep up. So Arend was forced to innovate, and develop a new recipe for the franchises.

The legendary chef developed the McRib in 1981.

The sandwich was first introduced as a limited-time offering in the Kansas City area in 1981 and quickly became popular.

Its popularity has been sustained by its disappearance and reappearance, usually around fall.

It was removed from the regular menu in 1985, but returned in 1989 and remained available in various markets until 2005. Since 2006, it has frequently returned as a limited-time item, often in the fall.

McRib, with a side of Bitcoin

The sandwich's fabled return was marked by a long, cryptic X post by McDonald's senior marketing director Guillaume Huin on Oct. 22. In his post, he gave a nod to the Bitcoin (BTC) community, and its long-held superstition.

Some within the crypto community believe that the leading cryptocurrency tends to perform well after the McRib makes a comeback, he wrote.

"The joke reached its peak in December 2024 when Bitcoin broke $100,000 for the first time in history on the exact same day the McRib returned to menus."

Huin isn't wrong.

It's a widely popular joke within the crypto community and the latest McDonald's announcement only fueled it.

Leading crypto trading exchanges such as Coinbase and Kraken posted memes on X, hoping the McRib will bring back the market rally.

Testing the McRib-Bitcoin theory

Some traders swear by it: when McRib returns to the McDonald's menu, a Bitcoin rally cannot be far behind.

In reality, there is no direct link between the minced pork and price charts.

It is the kind of belief crypto degens cling to when charts look grim.

Popular crypto analyst Quinten Francois gave a blunt reality check as he compared the Bitcoin price action within 30 days of McRib's return to the menu over the years.

  • Oct. 7, 2019: BTC trades at $8,206 as McRib returns to the menu.

The analysis by Francois shows a complete picture in which Bitcoin has several times lost value after McRib's return, contradicting the erroneous yet popular theory.

It simply proves that Bitcoin price trends following McRib's comeback are nothing more than a joke.

Yet, some of McRib's most devoted fans belong to the crypto community.
