CryptoCompass editorial visual for markets coverage.

The meme sector’s market capitalization rose from $23.38 billion to $30.64 billion during August, a gain of about 31%.

PEPE ran 85% off its July low. FARTCOIN gained 94%. NPC added more than 150% and DOG, the Bitcoin Runes memecoin, nearly 90%.

Go looking for the project announcements behind those moves and you will not find them.

What Actually Happened

Bitcoin broke a six-week range and ran from around $64,000 toward $80,000, driven by a Treasury buyback expansion rather than anything crypto-specific.

More than $4 billion in short positions were liquidated across two days during that break, with further cascades in the following week.

Memecoins are the highest-beta expression of that move. They rise furthest when liquidity arrives because they were shorted hardest and hold the thinnest order books.

That is the whole explanation for most of the August gains. The tokens with the largest percentage moves were generally the ones that had fallen furthest first.

PEPE is the clearest example. It was squeezed down to around $0.0000023 in July, its lowest in a long time, and the 85% rebound took it to roughly $0.0000042. That is a large percentage recovering a small part of a much larger decline.

The Numbers Do Not All Agree

Sector figures vary by source and by snapshot, which matters if you are comparing them.

One report put the August range at $23.38 billion to $30.64 billion. CoinGecko’s meme category showed $31.9 billion at one point, down 5.6% over 24 hours, and a separate category summary cited $33.5 billion with $3.7 billion in daily volume.

Those differ because category membership differs between trackers. Whether MemeCore, Official Trump or SPX6900 counts as a memecoin changes the total by billions.

Optimisus ran into the same problem with token supply data in the piece on six trackers disagreeing about one unlock. The lesson transfers directly.

Treat any single sector market cap figure as one methodology’s answer, not the answer.

The Base Rate Nobody Prints Next to the Green Candles

This is the context that turns a rally story into a useful one.

CoinGecko reported that 11.6 million tokens, including memecoins, failed during 2025.

Data on pump.fun launches indicates 68.67% of tokens survived less than 24 hours.

So the sector where several assets just doubled is the same sector where roughly two in three new launches do not last a day.

Both facts describe the same market. The tokens generating headlines are survivors of a process that kills almost everything, and survivorship is doing most of the work in any list of recent performance.

Which Moves Have Something Behind Them

A small number do, and it is worth separating them.

Dogecoin’s move came with genuine infrastructure activity. Dogecoin Core 1.14.9 shipped security patches and RPC optimizations for payment processors in August, and DogeOS is building an application layer with a mid-2026 target window.

Whether that supports price is a separate question. Analyst commentary has flagged whale selling and treasury divestment as persistent overhead pressure alongside the bullish community sentiment.

Pudgy Penguins has real consumer distribution, which Optimisus examined in the piece on 1,800 Target stores and a token that moved 4.6%. Brand success and token price remain only loosely connected.

Shiba Inu’s promised Shibarium privacy upgrade has still not shipped, covered in the six-year anniversary piece.

The Presale Problem

One practical warning about reading memecoin coverage this month.

A large share of what appears in search results for memecoin news is paid press release material promoting presale tokens, distributed through wire services and formatted to look like market commentary.

The tell is consistent. A piece will discuss DOGE and PEPE briefly, then pivot to a token you have never heard of with a staged presale, a listing price multiple and a claim of 1250x potential.

Optimisus does not cover those and will not link to them. If a memecoin article’s actual subject is a token that does not trade yet, it is an advertisement.

What to Watch Now

The sector fell 5.6% in 24 hours at one point after the rally, which is the ordinary rhythm of high-beta assets after a fast move.

Bitcoin lost most of its acceptance above $80,000 on a hot inflation print, covered in our analysis of the PCE reversal.

Memecoins carry higher beta than bitcoin in both directions. A sector that gained 31% because bitcoin rose 23% will give back more than bitcoin does when the move reverses.

The useful question when reading any memecoin headline this month is simply whether the move is larger than bitcoin’s over the same window. If it is not, the story is about liquidity rather than about the token.
