@MentoLabs and @0XPolygon's Labs are joining forces to build what they describe as institutional-grade foreign exchange infrastructure on-chain. The partnership kicks off with a high-velocity USDm/EURm liquidity pool, aimed squarely at competing for a slice of the roughly $2 trillion in daily Euro-Dollar trading volume.
The collaboration leans on Polygon's existing track record in stablecoin activity. According to the announcement, the network has processed $11.1 billion in lifetime non-USD stablecoin volume, giving the partnership a proven base on which to build predictable, oracle-referenced execution. The mechanism of choice is a Fixed Price Market Maker (FPMM) model, designed to deliver reliable pricing without the slippage risks that have historically made decentralised venues a harder sell for institutional desks.
A key design choice in the deal is the use of @Schuman_io's $EUROP as a reserve asset backing $EURm. Schuman Financial holds a stablecoin issuer license granted by France's Autorité de Contrôle Prudentiel et de Résolution (ACPR) under the EU's MiCA framework, making it the first European company to secure that licence in France. $EUROP is a MiCA-compliant, euro-denominated stablecoin redeemable 1:1 for the euro, issued by Schuman Financial and regulated by the ACPR. Reserves are held at government-supervised EU banks such as Société Générale and are audited by KPMG. Anchoring $EURm to a fully regulated reserve asset is a deliberate attempt to satisfy compliance requirements that have kept many institutional players on the sidelines of DeFi.
Institutional liquidity for the pool will be sourced through @Capa_Fi, which is positioned in the announcement as the provider of professional-grade depth for the exchange. Together, the three-way structure, Mento's FX infrastructure, Polygon's settlement layer, and Schuman's regulated euro stablecoin, is designed to replicate the reliability that institutional FX desks expect from traditional venues, while settling on-chain.
Mento describes itself as the leading decentralised FX infrastructure for institutions and individuals, enabling the launch, trading, and on-chain settlement of global currencies, with use cases spanning cross-border payments, treasury operations, and institutional settlement. Polygon Labs, for its part, builds and operates blockchain infrastructure for global payments, with its Open Money Stack targeting banks, fintechs, enterprises, and consumer applications.
The USDm/EURm pool represents an early step, but the partnership's stated ambition is a broader on-chain FX layer capable of absorbing meaningful institutional flow from a market that, by traditional finance standards, remains largely off-chain and operationally fragmented.
