Polygon Opens Stablecoin Checkout to Merchants
@0xPolygon has introduced a stablecoin payments layer that lets merchants accept digital currency at checkout and settle instantly in either fiat currency or cryptocurrency. The move extends Polygon's push to position itself as the default blockchain rail for real-world commerce.
Under the new setup, merchants can accept multi-chain stablecoins from customers using any compatible wallet. A backend routing protocol then converts the incoming payment into the merchant's chosen settlement currency, whether that is $USDC or a direct bank deposit, without requiring any manual intervention from the seller.
Stripe Integration Keeps Existing Workflows Intact
A key feature of the rollout is how it fits into infrastructure merchants already use. Stripe stablecoin payments on Polygon cover the full journey from checkout to settlement, integrated directly with Polygon rails. That means merchants do not need to rebuild their ordering or checkout systems to start accepting on-chain payments.
Customers can pay using over 400 supported wallets, while merchants can automatically receive fiat settlements through Stripe's integrated billing system. Stripe has built a custom smart contract that allows customers to save their wallet as a payment method and authorize payments without repeated signatures, and stablecoin payments can be managed alongside fiat transactions in the standard Stripe dashboard.
Stripe routes stablecoin payments through Polygon rails, with global $USDC payments live for merchants across 150 or more countries. The flat fee structure and multi-chain support make the offering particularly attractive for cross-border transactions, where traditional card rails can carry higher costs.
Shift4, one of the world's largest independent payment processors, already settles in stablecoin on Polygon for hundreds of thousands of merchants worldwide. Revolut has also processed over $1.2 billion in stablecoin volume on Polygon, citing fees significantly lower than competing networks.
The integration signals a broader shift in how payment infrastructure is being built. Rather than asking merchants to adopt new tools, Polygon and Stripe are embedding on-chain rails into the systems merchants already rely on, reducing the barrier to crypto acceptance considerably.
