@MetaMask has opened sign-ups for its blockchain-native payment card in the United Kingdom. The product runs on infrastructure built with @Mastercard that links self-custodial wallets to point-of-sale systems.
UK users can now spend crypto and stablecoins directly from their non-custodial Web3 wallets at Mastercard merchants worldwide. They do not need to fund a centralized exchange debit card first.
How the self-custodial card works
MetaMask's support documentation says the card pairs a self-custodial wallet with the reach of Mastercard transactions. According to MetaMask, users designate tokens from their wallet, set spending limits and keep access to their funds until a transaction is completed. At the point of sale, the card converts the available tokens into fiat currency such as pounds or euros.
That differs from many crypto cards. Consensys, the company behind MetaMask, has said most traditional crypto cards are custodial and require users to pre-load funds onto an exchange account, as reported by The Block. MetaMask Card instead leaves assets in the user's wallet until the moment of payment.
MetaMask says the card works wherever Mastercard is accepted, at over 150 million merchants. The same page says the card uses the wallet's private keys for non-custodial security and lets users freeze or replace it from the app.
Background and UK availability
The UK was one of the first markets for the product. Consensys said in its original announcement that the card launched as a limited pilot of a few thousand digital-only cards for users in EU countries and the UK. The card supported spending USDC, USDT and WETH on the Linea network at that stage.
The company later expanded the product. In February 2026, Consensys announced general availability across the United States, according to Cointelegraph via TradingView.
UK sign-up status has changed over time. MetaMask's card page has at points stated that sign-ups in the US and UK were temporarily closed, so the latest reopening restores access for new UK applicants. Prospective users should check eligibility in the MetaMask app, as the card requires full identity verification and proof of residency, according to Datawallet.
