Mirae Asset Consulting has finalized its acquisition of Korbit, a leading South Korean cryptocurrency exchange, after completing all necessary regulatory procedures. This move elevates Mirae Asset Consulting, a prominent subsidiary of Mirae Asset Financial Group, to the position of Korbit’s largest shareholder and underscores the growing institutional presence in the country’s digital asset market.

Mirae Asset assumes control of Korbit

Korbit announced that Mirae Asset Consulting has officially become its controlling shareholder following regulatory approval from relevant authorities. Mirae Asset Financial Group, based in Seoul, is one of Asia’s largest independent financial services companies, providing asset management, investment banking, and related financial products globally.

Korbit stated that the exchange’s operating company will remain unchanged after the ownership transfer. Customers can continue to use current trading services, deposits, withdrawals, and account features without any interruption.

The exchange clarified that both user deposits and virtual assets will continue to be managed separately under South Korea’s Virtual Asset User Protection Act. It further confirmed that personal data processing policies would not be affected by the acquisition.

Korbit has assured users that, despite the ownership change, their deposits, trading, and personal data management remain unchanged, in compliance with regulatory protections.

Mirae Asset Consulting initially acquired a 92.06% stake in Korbit. According to reports, this shareholding is expected to rise to 97.15% pending further share purchases. Cumulative investment in the exchange may reach approximately 141.4 billion won, up from the previous investment of 133.5 billion won.

This deal is among the first significant cases of a major South Korean financial institution acquiring control of a domestic cryptocurrency exchange. It marks a notable entry of established finance into the rapidly evolving crypto sector.

Strategic expansion in digital assets

Mirae Asset Consulting has stated that the acquisition is intended to unlock future growth opportunities in digital assets and to bridge traditional finance with blockchain technology.

Korbit was established as South Korea’s first virtual asset exchange and remains one of the few licensed crypto trading platforms in the country. While Korbit operates in a market dominated by larger competitors, it retains regulatory approval and a respected position in the industry.

Regulatory authorities, including the Korea Fair Trade Commission, reviewed and approved the acquisition after determining that it would not restrict market competition.

The move comes amid a broader push in South Korea to clarify digital asset regulations and encourage stable participation from traditional financial institutions. Mirae Asset’s entry into the digital exchange business signals growing appetite among established players to engage with blockchain-based services and tokenization.

Korbit and Mirae Asset are expected to prioritize innovation and expansion in digital asset services, working to forge stronger connections between conventional finance and the blockchain-driven economy.

The acquisition of Korbit by Mirae Asset reflects a growing trend among traditional financial institutions to integrate digital assets and foster collaboration between established finance and innovative blockchain platforms.
