Shivon Zilis says Elon Musk abruptly ended their relationship after years of friendship, co-parenting and a partnership that produced four children.
Key Points:
- Zilis says Musk ended the relationship within a week and without warning.
- The pair share four children, including twins born in 2021 through in vitro fertilization.
- Musk had not publicly addressed the breakup in the latest reporting, while Zilis said she hopes they can remain friends and co-parents.
Zilis Breakup Statement
Zilis, director of operations and special projects at Neuralink, announced the split Oct. 2 on X, saying the breakup followed a sudden change in a relationship they had largely kept private. “It’s hard to go from in love to let go in a week with no warning, but that’s just how it is sometimes,” she wrote.
In the same post, Zilis described their home life as a source of stability for Musk and said she remained grateful for their four children, adding that she was “hurting” but still cared deeply about him.
Zilis also shared a screenshot of a Sept. 24 text exchange in which she told Musk she loved him after breakfast and he replied, “Love you too.”
The exchange does not explain the split. Musk has not publicly offered his own account of the breakup.

Musk Relationship History
The announcement adds public detail to a relationship that had previously surfaced mostly through court testimony and biography.
Their relationship had long mixed personal and professional ties, with Zilis working across technology companies connected to Musk before the pair became parents. Biographer Walter Isaacson called Zilis Musk’s “intellectual companion.”
During testimony earlier this year in Musk’s legal battle with OpenAI, Zilis said the pair had a brief romantic encounter in 2016 before becoming close friends and colleagues. She testified that, when she later planned to become a single mother, Musk offered to serve as a platonic sperm donor, and the arrangement eventually became romantic. Zilis had previously worked at Tesla and served on the OpenAI board until 2023.
The pair welcomed twins Strider and Azure in 2021 through IVF, followed by daughter Arcadia in 2024 and son Seldon Lycurgus in 2025. Those milestones trace how a private friendship and co-parenting arrangement evolved over nearly a decade before Zilis publicly said the romantic relationship had ended.
