Cryptographer Nik Bougalis, widely recognized for his pivotal contributions to the XRP Ledger, has rejoined active development on the project’s source code after an absence of nearly two years.
Ripple leadership welcomes Bougalis’s comeback
Ripple‘s engineering community showed strong support for Bougalis’s return. David Schwartz, who previously held the position of CTO at Ripple, expressed his appreciation on X after learning that Bougalis would once again contribute to the XRP Ledger. Schwartz had once suggested that the opportunity to collaborate with Bougalis might be the only reason he would consider coming back to coding.
H. Ayo Akinyele, head of engineering at RippleX, also acknowledged that Bougalis’s expertise was essential for tackling upcoming technological challenges.
RippleX’s head of engineering described Bougalis as a key figure in addressing next-generation technology initiatives as the industry advances.
Bougalis marked his official comeback by submitting pull request PR #8300 to the XRPLF/rippled repository under the name “I’m back, baby.” This submission is not merely symbolic; it introduces significant technical upgrades targeting some of the ledger’s foundational components.
Highlights of his proposed changes include refactoring the BaseUInt data type to utilize 64-bit elements when the platform architecture permits, and the removal of potentially hazardous raw pointers and unchecked runtime constructors. The main objective is to enhance the code’s safety at compile time, ultimately protecting the network against failures during periods of heavy use.
Bougalis’s changes are designed to improve security and optimize system performance by directly addressing vulnerabilities in the ledger’s core code.
Bougalis, eighth to join Ripple in its early years and inventor of several key cryptographic patents, stepped away from the project in 2022 and later served as CTO at the Algorand Foundation in 2025. His return to XRPL occurs as the broader blockchain landscape faces significant structural transformations.
XRPL adapts to ongoing industry shifts
The XRP Ledger is now preparing for further integration of real-world assets (RWA), while also adapting to evolving U.S. regulatory requirements. Bougalis’s deep technical background and reputation for setting industry standards in secure protocol design highlights Ripple’s ongoing commitment to robust engineering.
Alongside these core advancements, monitoring market trends and new token launches remains crucial for developers and investors. For instance, the meme token market frequently witnesses internet trends turning into substantial capital flows. Recent data from Fomo App highlights a notable case where an initial $99 purchase of “Niu Lai” transformed into about $370,000. This example illustrates the value of not just tracking prices, but also understanding investor timing and token selection. Fomo App responds to these needs by combining token discovery, live trading features, social feeds, investor leaderboards, and real-time notifications for a comprehensive user experience.
The partnership between veteran developers and new market tools signals a period of innovation and renewed focus for the XRPL ecosystem, with technical and community-driven growth on the horizon.
