Huang laid out the case alongside BlackRock CEO Larry Fink at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, and the argument circulated widely again over the weekend as fresh labor data landed. He called the wave of data center work the largest infrastructure buildout in human history, and said plumbers, electricians, steelworkers and network technicians will carry a large share of it. Wages in those trades have nearly doubled during the current boom, he said.
Huang described AI infrastructure as a five-layer stack running from energy and chips at the base up through cloud capacity, models and applications on top. Trillions of dollars in further spending will follow, he added, on top of the hundreds of billions already committed.

McKinsey projects the country will need 130,000 more trained electricians between 2023 and 2030, along with 240,000 construction laborers and 150,000 construction supervisors. Staffing firm Randstadfound that demand for skilled trades grew 27% over four years, with electrician postings up 18% and construction roles up 30% since late 2022. Pay has moved with the shortage.
Workers on data center projects averaged $81,800 a year in early 2026, roughly 32% above wages on comparable commercial builds, according to hiring platform Skillit.
Executives outside the chip business have been raising the same alarm for months. Fink told an energy conference in Houston that he had warned members of the Trump administration the country would simply run out of the electricians it needs.
Ford CEO Jim Farley has put the national shortfall at 600,000 factory workers and 500,000 construction workers, and he argues the education system still funnels students toward four-year degrees.
The training pipeline cannot close that gap quickly, because a registered electrical apprenticeship runs four to five years from enrollment to a journeyman license. Contractor groups see the industry needing 349,000 more workers this year, with that figure climbing to 456,000 in 2027.
Huang has been making this argument for well over a year now.
He told a British broadcaster in 2025 that the skilled craft segment of every economy would see a boom, and he pressed the point again at Davos as Palantir and CoreWeave executives echoed it. He returned to it at a university commencement in May, telling electricians and plumbers that their moment had arrived.
