OPay has pushed back against a recent claim on X that the fintech company stopped using phone numbers as wallet account identifiers. The rumor suggested that customers were required to visit OPay agents to receive new account numbers.
In response to Technext, the fintech has firmly stated that this information is not true. They confirmed that phone numbers are still being used as wallet account numbers and that there’s no need for customers to visit an agent to change or update their accounts.
To address the issue, OPay reached out directly to the user who made the post, requesting that the false claim be removed within 30 minutes. The company emphasized the importance of providing accurate information about financial services, warning that sharing misleading information can not only confuse customers but also potentially harm OPay’s reputation.
They have made it clear that if the misleading post is not taken down, they might take legal action. The fintech encourages its customers to rely on official communication channels for any updates regarding their accounts and services, rather than believing unverified posts floating around on social media.
OPay faces another false-information claim
Recently, the company faced another wave of false information, just weeks after rumors circulated about the company shutting down its operations in Nigeria.
In that earlier incident, the Nigeria Police Force’s National Cybercrime Centre arrested Hafsat Abubakar after an investigation linked her to the creation and distribution of a fake document claiming that OPay would stop its services. This misleading post spread quickly on social media, garnering over 572,000 views in just a few minutes and urging people to withdraw their funds from the platform.
In response to the shutdown rumors, OPay took legal action against three individuals on social media, demanding they remove the posts and apologize for spreading misinformation. The police investigation started following a formal complaint from the company regarding the situation.

Now, OPay is dealing with a different issue concerning claims about account numbers. While this situation is separate from the shutdown rumor, it again emphasizes the serious consequences that unverified financial information can have when shared online.
For the time being, OPay reassures its customers that they can continue using their phone numbers as wallet account numbers. There’s no need to visit an agent to make any changes, allowing users to access their funds without any hassle.
