OpenAI has downsized its planned capital increase and valuation target in response to a deepening wave of AI-focused stock sales. According to sources reported by the Financial Times, the company is proceeding with a more scaled-back financing round than initially anticipated.
Tech Stocks’ Slump Influences Strategy
The Nasdaq 100 index has plummeted approximately 10% since peaking on October 6, culminating in a 4.5% drop on the preceding Friday. This accelerated sell-off in technology stocks has intensified valuation pressures specifically for AI-oriented companies.
Initially, OpenAI aimed to raise $30 billion and secure investments based on a valuation of $1.4 trillion. However, the company is now contemplating raising around $20 billion with a revised valuation target of $1.25 trillion.
OpenAI’s planned fundraising round has seen a downward revision both in the amount of capital sought and the valuation target.
Competitive Pressures Beyond Markets
The volatility in equity markets is not the sole challenge affecting OpenAI’s quest for capital. The company faces direct competition from rivals like Anthropic in garnering investor interest. As one of OpenAI’s main adversaries in the AI space, Anthropic is reportedly aiming for a November initial public offering and seeking to raise up to $100 billion on a $1.5 trillion valuation.
OpenAI previously postponed its own public offering plans to 2027, thus currently focusing on securing private equity instead of going public in the short term.
Valuation Dynamics Undergo Transformation
The rapid ascent of valuations for AI companies over the past two years, driven by high growth expectations, is now facing recalibration. Recent sell-offs in tech stocks have prompted investors to adopt a more cautious approach to pricing. OpenAI’s adjustment of its targets underscores that this cautious trend is affecting private markets as well.
OpenAI’s revisions highlight that while access to finance persists in the AI sector, conditions have tightened compared to previous periods. Appetite for large-scale rounds is more intricately linked to levels of valuation.
The Nasdaq 100’s nearly 10% decline over three weeks has heightened pressure on AI-related firms’ financing plans.
