OpenAI cut the price of GPT-5.6 Luna, its budget-tier model, by 80% on July 30, 2026, while trimming GPT-5.6 Terra by 20% and leaving flagship Sol untouched. The move comes roughly three weeks after the GPT-5.6 family launched, and lands squarely in the middle of an intensifying price war across the AI industry.
Luna now costs 20 cents per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens, down from $1 and $6 — an 80% reduction. Terra falls to $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output, down from $2.50 and $15. OpenAI attributed the cuts to efficiency gains made during GPT-5.6’s development, including the model’s own ability to help optimize training and inference code, according to CNBC’s reporting. Sol, the flagship, keeps its $5 input and $30 output pricing, alongside a new Fast mode that runs up to 2.5 times faster at double the cost.
The competitive backdrop driving this
The cuts aren’t happening in a vacuum. Enterprise customers have grown visibly more cost-sensitive this year — ride-sharing company Uber reportedly burned through its entire annual AI budget in four months before introducing internal spending tiers — while cheap, capable open-weight models from Chinese labs like Moonshot and DeepSeek have pressured pricing across the board throughout July. OpenAI’s own marketing leaned into this directly, citing a benchmark showing Luna matching Claude Opus 5’s intelligence score at roughly one-sixth the cost per task, positioning it as the strongest price-to-performance option currently on the market.
Anthropic’s answer looks different, not absent
Anthropic didn’t cut its sticker prices in response. Instead, it replaced Opus 4.8 with the more capable Opus 5 at the identical $5/$25 rate — effectively lowering the price per unit of capability without touching the headline number. Anthropic’s Fable 5 remains priced at $10/$50, notably higher than GPT-5.6 Sol’s unchanged $5/$30, while Sonnet 5 is in an introductory period at $2/$10 that rises to $3/$15 after August 31. The two labs are converging on the same outcome — more capability per dollar — through different mechanisms: OpenAI cutting sticker prices, Anthropic upgrading the model behind an unchanged one.
The cuts also apply automatically inside OpenAI’s existing product surfaces — Codex and ChatGPT Work usage accounting adjust without any account changes needed — which matters for adoption speed. A price cut that requires developers to actively migrate to a new model ID captures far less of the addressable savings than one that lands transparently inside tools people are already using, and OpenAI appears to have designed the rollout with that in mind. The company framed the changes as part of a broader strategy statement: pushing the model frontier across cost, capability, and speed simultaneously, rather than trading one for another.
What to watch next
Whether Anthropic, Google, or other labs respond with direct sticker-price cuts of their own in the coming weeks.
Whether the Luna and Terra cuts meaningfully shift enterprise volume away from cheaper open-weight alternatives.
Whether OpenAI’s dual-track strategy — cutting utility-tier prices while holding the flagship steady — holds as competitive pressure continues.
