Osmosis (@osmosis), the Cosmos-based decentralized exchange, has switched off $OSMO inflation. Today's daily epoch minted zero new tokens, down from 91,324 a day. Proposal 1053 passed with a 91.1% yes vote.
The daily release of developer tokens is also paused, leaving about 51.9M OSMO in place until a separate vote.
What changes for stakers
Staking rewards now come only from protocol revenue, mainly trading fees. According to the proposal discussion on the Osmosis community forum, stakers continue to receive their share of taker fees and transaction fees, while the roughly 2% APR that came from issuance ends. The forum text says this is mostly replaced by an estimated 1.7% additional APR from a larger taker fee share under Proposal 1052. Actual rewards can vary and are not guaranteed.
The trade-off is predictability. Commentary from Interactive Crypto notes that emissions provide a guaranteed nominal yield, whereas protocol revenue fluctuates with trading volumes. If trading activity cools, staking yields would fall with it.
Supply now only heads one way
Osmosis estimates its current burns remove about 2% of supply a year, so the 955.6M OSMO in existence today should only decrease from here. The burns come from sources such as taker fees and ProtoRev revenue. The proposal forum post states that OSMO was already deflationary, with burned tokens outpacing those issued into circulating supply over the last year.
The mechanism is straightforward. According to a CoinGabbar explainer, the proposal works by setting the mint module's start epoch to 100,000,000, a point the chain will not reach in practice. The same report said the mint module had still been distributing about 121,766 OSMO per day, though only about 40,000 of that entered circulating supply.
The 51.9M developer tokens were minted at genesis and remain in the vesting module account. Any future release would need a separate governance decision.
For OSMO holders, the shift ties the token's economics more closely to how much trading the exchange attracts. Whether that proves durable will depend on swap volumes and fee income in the months ahead.
