Armed Raid Targets Crypto Holder in Pattaya
A brazen armed robbery at a luxury gated estate near Pattaya, Thailand, has renewed concerns about the physical safety of cryptocurrency holders. The incident took place at around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, inside a gated residential community in Nongprue.
According to the initial police account, the three suspects used a ladder to climb into the house before heading to the victim's bedroom, where they allegedly kicked in the door, threatened the victim with a gun, tied his hands, and demanded valuables and access to a safe.
The victim was a Chinese expatriate with Turkish citizenship, who was forced to transfer approximately $820,000 in cryptocurrency during the robbery. The gang held the foreigner at gunpoint, restrained him, and forced him to transfer the cryptocurrency to the wallet of one of the perpetrators, who sold it immediately. The robbers also took around 150,000 baht in cash and three Rolex watches.
Police Trace Crypto Transfers as Investigation Widens
Investigators have recovered an abandoned vehicle linked to the suspects, are reviewing surveillance footage, and are actively tracing the sold crypto assets to identify the perpetrators.Police are also working with the Immigration Bureau to examine the suspects' travel records and with forensic officers to collect evidence from the house.
Initial information suggested that the three attackers might be Chinese nationals, but police have not confirmed their citizenship. The victim managed to escape from the house after the robbery and reported the incident to Nong Prue Police Station, while police said they are still verifying the suspects' identities and nationalities as investigators gather further evidence.
The incident is part of a broader and troubling pattern. Nongprue and the wider Banglamung area have seen a run of high-value home invasions and crypto robberies targeted at foreign residents. Globally, Chainalysis estimates that such violent robberies have stolen over $30 million in cryptocurrency in the first half of 2026 alone. Security researchers have long warned that publicly known crypto wealth can make holders targets for so-called wrench attacks, where criminals bypass digital security by threatening victims in person.
