PayPal (PYPL) shares experienced a substantial rally Friday, gaining approximately 5% to reach $55.13 amid intensifying acquisition speculation surrounding the digital payments giant.

Market participants referenced a Betaville “uncooked” report making rounds Friday morning. The alert indicated that a West Coast-headquartered American technology corporation might be considering an all-stock acquisition proposal for PayPal.

This structure diverges significantly from PayPal’s stated preferences. Industry sources indicate the company’s board favors an all-cash transaction rather than accepting equity compensation.

PayPal has been at the center of acquisition discussions before. Earlier this year, payment processor Stripe partnered with private equity powerhouse Advent explored acquiring the fintech platform.

Previous Acquisition Attempt Collapsed Over Termination Fee Dispute

The Stripe-Advent negotiations ultimately stalled over disagreements concerning a $2 billion breakup fee. Neither party could reach consensus on who would assume responsibility for this fee should the transaction fail to close.

The Stripe-Advent partnership had reportedly contemplated offering up to $68 per share entirely in cash. Such a valuation would have placed PayPal’s enterprise value north of $50 billion.

Sources indicate the consortium completely withdrew from acquisition discussions last month. Since then, PayPal has continued exploring strategic alternatives.

PayPal declined to provide comment regarding the latest acquisition speculation, according to Benzinga reporting.

In a separate development, Great Hill Capital Chairman Thomas Hayes presented his own strategic vision this week. He proposed that Meta Platforms (META) should consider acquiring PayPal.

Hayes suggested a $90 billion purchase price. According to his analysis, this valuation translates to approximately a 7% free-cash-flow yield, making it financially accretive regardless of whether Meta finances the deal through cash, stock, or a combination.

His investment thesis emphasizes data synergies. Hayes contended that combining PayPal’s extensive transaction data with Meta’s advertising infrastructure could create competitive advertising capabilities rivaling Amazon (AMZN).

He projected a three-to-four-year return on investment timeline for the $90 billion acquisition cost. Hayes clarified his comments represented personal shareholder perspective rather than any proprietary deal intelligence.

Technical Analysis and Chart Positioning

PYPL currently trades approximately 3% above its 20-day moving average of $53.45. However, shares remain roughly 3% beneath the 50-day moving average of $56.79, positioning the equity in what technical analysts describe as an inflection point.

The broader trend appears more constructive. Shares are trading approximately 8% above the 100-day moving average and 9% above the 200-day moving average.

The relative strength index (RSI) registered 50.75. This reading suggests neutral momentum, indicating neither overbought nor oversold conditions.

Moving average positioning presents a mixed technical outlook. The 20-day moving average continues trading below the 50-day moving average, traditionally interpreted as a near-term bearish configuration.

However, the 50-day moving average maintains its position above the 200-day moving average after August’s golden cross formation. This arrangement generally signals longer-term bullish momentum.

Technical traders are monitoring whether PYPL can successfully break above and sustain the 50-day moving average level. Achieving this would transform Friday’s advance into a more sustainable uptrend.

Significant overhead resistance appears at $59.50, representing a recent consolidation ceiling. Critical support emerges at $52, corresponding to the convergence zone between the 20-day and 200-day moving averages.

In analyst coverage, Deutsche Bank increased its PayPal price objective to $55 from $50 Friday. The firm maintained its Hold rating on the stock.

PayPal shares advanced 4.80% to $55.13 at Friday’s publication time.
