Pi Network's Biggest Protocol Upgrade Goes Live

Pi Network (@PiCoreTeam) has rolled out its long-awaited Protocol v27 upgrade, widely considered the most significant technical milestone in the project's history. The upgrade introduces more flexible smart contract authentication, an automated market maker architecture, and improved RPC infrastructure, collectively laying the groundwork for decentralised applications and token swaps on the network for the first time.

Testnet deployment began on August 21, with the mainnet activation targeted for September 15, 2026.The upgrade follows Protocol 26, which required all 421,000 node operators to update by August 11 or lose connectivity, clearing the path for this final planned protocol change.Protocol 27 delivers smart contract authentication, an automated market maker DEX, and RPC server infrastructure to a blockchain with 14 million migrated users.

Pi Launchpad stress-tested the DEX on testnet through the SLICE token launch, drawing 242,000 Pioneers who committed 15.92 million Test-Pi across 17 days. The Core Team has also expanded its developer toolkit, releasing PiVerify, Pi Sign-In, and SoloHost at Pi2Day 2026, giving external developers identity tools and a computing framework that did not exist a year ago.

$PI Drops Sharply Despite the Milestone

Markets, however, responded negatively. Per CoinGecko, $PI has fallen roughly 13% in the 24 hours following the upgrade announcement, with the token trading around $0.08. The Pi Network price on September 16, 2026 sat at approximately $0.0867, down over 11% on the day, with a 24-hour range of $0.08565 to $0.09803 and a market cap of around $970 million. The asset is now down nearly 80% over the past year, reflecting persistent selling pressure across the project's timeline.

The sell-off is consistent with a broader pattern for Pi Network, where major announcements have historically coincided with price weakness rather than rallies. Pi's mainnet has operated without programmable contract deployment since its February 2022 launch, and Protocol 27 introduces an authentication layer that gates which contracts can execute on-chain.As of September 2026, approximately 16.6 million of Pi's 60 million engaged Pioneers have completed mainnet migration, representing a 27.6% conversion rate, a figure that highlights the gap between the project's user base and its on-chain activity.

Whether the Protocol v27 mainnet transition translates into real developer activity and sustainable demand for $PI remains the central question for holders going forward.
