Pi Network has completed its first real-device distributed computing test, using five volunteer node operators to validate the full job cycle through its SoloHost application. The milestone arrived alongside the release of Node version 0.6.2.
How the Test Worked
The five volunteer node operators each received jobs, performed the required computations, and returned the results to a Pi coordinator. The run covered the complete flow: connecting to the coordinator, receiving and processing tasks automatically through the SoloHost app, and reporting results back. The test is separate from the basic role of nodes in supporting the Pi blockchain and relates to Pi's testing of additional computing functions that can run through its node infrastructure.
@PiCoreTeam described it as an initial functionality test across real devices. Pi did not provide detailed performance figures from the test. No timeline for wider deployment has been given.
What Node 0.6.2 Brings
The Pi Node version 0.6.2 introduces improvements to SoloHost, node connectivity, and the Pi Desktop user experience.The release also introduced UPnP support, designed to make it easier for operators to automatically configure the ports required by Pi Desktop, alongside a new port checker and several SoloHost improvements. Previously, operators had to configure ports manually, a process the team acknowledged was technically challenging for some users.
Through SoloHost, the project further automates and scales functionality into a real app intended to provide production-level utility for third-party clients. Participating nodes can be compensated by those clients in Pi, in return for turning available computing capacity into a resource for real applications.
The broader ambition is considerable. The test represents another step toward Pi's plan to use the spare computing capacity of its node network for AI and other compute-intensive applications. The project currently claims a network of more than 420,000 Pioneer-operated computers.The idea is that third-party clients could eventually tap into those resources, while participating node operators could be compensated in the native token for providing computing power. For now, though, a fully operational distributed computing marketplace does not yet exist.
