Three New Capabilities for Pi Builders
Pi Network (@PiCoreTeam) has introduced a fresh set of developer capabilities, framing the move as a direct effort to expand utility at the application level. The network's position is straightforward: technical resources only create value when developers can turn them into products that Pioneers actually use.
Since September 4, Pi Network has launched three new tools: local storage, a staking API, and native file sharing, all available at once for platform developers.
The additions include local storage support, access to app-specific staking data in the Ecosystem Directory Staking, and file and video sharing. Each addresses a different friction point in the development process.
Local storage is straightforward. Approved applications can now save data directly on the user's device, covering preferences and session states. Previously, developers had to rely on external infrastructure to do this.The feature remains reserved for whitelisted apps, and the available storage space is limited.
The staking data API allows developers to view the effective amount a user has staked for their app through the Ecosystem Directory Staking feature. Effective stake takes into account both the amount of Pi staked and a boost based on the duration of that stake. The API returns the user's effective stake specifically for the requesting app, giving developers access to app-specific staking information they can incorporate into their applications.
Developers can now use Pi.shareFile to enable users to share files, including video, from their applications. This gives developers another capability they can incorporate into apps that require file-sharing functionality, supporting a wider range of app experiences.
A Unified Home for Developer Documentation
The new documentation site consolidates resources on a single Pi-owned domain and reorganizes them around the developer journey. Developers can follow a clearer path from getting started and registering an app through sandbox development, integrating Pi features, and preparing an app for launch. The documentation was also enriched with details and clarifications that community developers had previously flagged as unclear.
The documentation covers account and app registration, sandbox setup, SDK and platform references, authentication and payments, and the path from sandbox development through Mainnet launch. It also introduces AI-assisted guidance for integrating authentication and payments.
Pi's development thesis remains straightforward: easier construction and clearer onboarding could encourage more useful applications across its ecosystem. Still, those tools must produce services users repeatedly choose before they can support sustained token demand.
