Pi Network Ventures, the investment arm of Pi Network, is drawing attention in crypto for a narrow focus on robotics and AI. Its first disclosed deal is a stake in OpenMind, a startup building software for robots, and the move has raised the question of where the fund will invest next.

Pi Network Ventures and the OpenMind Deal

According to a report by Motenv, the Pi Foundation launched Pi Network Ventures on May 14, 2025, with $100 million in Pi coin and US dollars to invest in companies across sectors including generative AI, fintech, gaming and e-commerce. The fund's first investment came about five months later, in OpenMind.

OpenMind is developing an operating system and open-source protocol that lets robots think, learn and work together, which Pi Network describes in its official blog post as being like Android for robots. The same post says the investment fits the fund's goals of increasing the utility of Pi, bringing more production onto Pi Network and moving Pi into real-world use cases.

Pi Network Ventures took part in OpenMind's earlier funding round. Coingape reported that the $20 million round also included Pantera Capital, Coinbase Ventures, Ribbit Capital and Sequoia China. Pantera Capital (@PanteraCapital) led the round, so the two firms are co-investors in OpenMind rather than direct rivals on this deal.

Pi Node Operators Test AI Workloads

Beyond the capital, the two teams ran a proof of concept. In a Chainwire press release dated November 3, 2025, Pi Network said volunteer Pi node operators ran AI models for OpenMind. The release said this showed node operators can run computations for third-party organisations.

The test points to a possible use for Pi's global node network beyond maintaining the ledger. It is an early-stage trial, and the release does not describe a commercial rollout.

Reaction in the Pi community has been mixed. CryptoRank noted that supporters welcomed the push into AI, while critics questioned whether resources should go to core platform development instead.

Claims that Pi Network Ventures is now the most discussed crypto venture firm, ahead of established names such as a16z (@a16z) and Pantera, rest on community sentiment rather than any published ranking. What can be said is that the fund has taken a distinct robotics angle and that market watchers are waiting to see which project it backs next. Pi's native token trades as $PI.
