Polkadot Deploys $dotUSD on Mainnet
@Polkadot has launched $dotUSD on mainnet, giving the network its own native, decentralized stablecoin. The asset is governed entirely through Polkadot's on-chain OpenGov framework, with no private issuing corporation or centralized point of control behind it.
The move follows OpenGov Referendum 1944, which passed with near-unanimous support. The proposal received 97.6% of votes cast in favor, with around 2.39 million DOT counted on the Aye side from 31 voters, compared with about 59,900 DOT from nine voters against.
$dotUSD operates autonomously through on-chain logic, with no centralized issuer standing behind it, a structural choice that sets it apart from tokens like USDT or USDC, which are issued and controlled by private companies.
A Phased Rollout Backed by the Polkadot Treasury
The rollout is deliberately staged: USDT-backed issuance comes first, with DOT collateral vaults and liquidations introduced only in phase two.The full system will let users lock DOT to mint $dotUSD while using on-chain mechanisms to maintain its dollar peg.
The plan includes creating protocol-owned $dotUSD assets and establishing a DOT/$dotUSD liquidity pool on the Polkadot Asset Hub, with treasury funds providing initial liquidity of $2.5 million in USDT allocated for minting and $2.5 million in DOT for the liquidity pool.
The launch positions $dotUSD as a direct alternative to the corporate stablecoin market, which remains dominated by a small number of centralized issuers that retain the ability to freeze assets and restrict wallet access. If fully adopted, $dotUSD would become the default stable-value instrument across Polkadot's ecosystem, cutting the network's dependence on third-party stablecoins like USDT and USDC.
This is the network's third on-chain push for a native stablecoin, following Acala's aUSD collapse in 2022 and the stalled pUSD proposal in 2025.The rationale for building a native stablecoin rather than relying on third-party options is the need for a decentralized stablecoin that is completely under Polkadot governance control.
