Polygon's proof-of-stake chain has reached roughly 5,000 transactions per second, marking a key milestone in its phased Gigagas scaling roadmap. The achievement keeps Polygon on track toward an end target of 100,000 TPS, a level the team says is necessary to support global payments, stablecoin transfers, and tokenized real-world assets at scale.
A Phased Approach to Scaling
The Gigagas roadmap, first announced in June 2025, set out a multi-stage plan to transform the Polygon PoS chain into high-throughput financial infrastructure. The July 2025 Bhilai hardfork raised the block gas limit and pushed the network past 1,000 TPS, with transaction finality of around five seconds and gas fees stabilized below $0.001. The subsequent Rio upgrade then raised the block gas limit further, laid the groundwork for 5,000 TPS, and eliminated reorganization risks for near-instant finality.
Looking further ahead, Polygon's plans include deep institutional integrations and an expanded role as a primary chain for payments and real-world assets, with partners already including Stripe, Hamilton Lane, Apollo, and BlackRock. In 2026 and beyond, the goal is to exceed 100,000 TPS through continued optimization of the validator network and deeper integration with Agglayer. Use cases in focus include retail payments, AI-driven microtransactions, and tokenized financial markets.
Visa Integration Adds Institutional Weight
Visa added Polygon to its global stablecoin settlement pilot alongside four other networks, with the program's blockchain settlement volume reaching a $7 billion annualized run rate, up 50% quarter-over-quarter. The addition gives fintech issuers a new way to settle card payment flows beyond standard banking hours, clearing funds on weekends and holidays without relying on traditional bank windows.
Polygon has also claimed the top spot for USD stablecoin payments, accounting for 34% of all stablecoin transfers and 54% of USDC transfers across all chains. That stablecoin dominance, combined with low transaction costs and rising throughput, is central to Polygon's pitch to institutional partners as it pushes toward the Gigagas target.
For Polygon, each upgrade compounds on the last, with the team framing the 100,000 TPS goal as a prerequisite for carrying global-scale financial activity on-chain.
