Standard Chartered’s relationship with Ripple dates back more than a decade, and according to crypto commentator X Finance Bull, the firm’s history offers an important view of how the bank’s digital asset strategy has developed.

In a tweet, X Finance Bull highlighted that Standard Chartered began working with Ripple in 2015. In 2016, the bank made a strategic investment in Ripple and received a board observer seat. The partnership also focused on developing commercially viable financial applications.

The relationship soon moved beyond investment. X Finance Bull noted that Standard Chartered processed a cross-border business payment using Ripple technology in under 10 seconds in 2016. In 2017, the bank participated in live RippleNet payments involving Axis Bank, while a 2018 pilot involved real-money settlement with Mitsubishi Corporation, MUFG and Krungsri.

Standard Chartered also identified Ripple in its 2018 annual report as a technology provider for real-time cross-border currency settlement.

Standard Chartered’s Digital Asset Strategy

X Finance Bull then pointed to Standard Chartered’s current position in institutional digital assets. The bank describes itself as a “Super-Connector” that can connect traditional banking with public blockchains, permissioned networks, CBDC networks, tokenized assets and global payments.

According to the commentator, Standard Chartered’s 2026 investor presentation still lists Ripple as a strategic investment and identifies “Ripple for payments” within its strategy.

The post also highlighted several connections between Standard Chartered’s venture arm and Ripple’s wider infrastructure. SC Ventures helped build Zodia Custody, which supports institutional digital asset custody, including XRP. SC Ventures also backed Metaco before Ripple acquired the digital asset custody company for $250 million.

X Finance Bull further noted that SC Ventures and Ripple are both backing Keyrock, an institutional liquidity company.

XRP’s Role Within the XRPL

The commentator connected these developments to Ripple’s expanding activities across payments, custody, stablecoins, prime brokerage, treasury services and tokenization.

According to the accompanying graphic, XRP remains the native asset of the XRP Ledger and serves functions that include transaction fees, reserves, settlement, foreign exchange routing, bridge liquidity and lending flows.

X Finance Bull therefore sees the Standard Chartered relationship as significant because both companies have continued developing their digital asset operations over many years.

The commentator emphasized that Standard Chartered did not begin working with Ripple recently, but has maintained a relationship that has evolved alongside the financial sector’s adoption of blockchain technology.

A Long-Term Institutional Connection

The post ultimately presents Standard Chartered and Ripple as companies moving toward greater involvement in tokenized money, on-chain settlement and institutional digital finance.

For X Finance Bull, the length of the relationship matters. More than a decade of investments, payment experiments, infrastructure development and digital asset initiatives provides the basis for his view that Standard Chartered could remain an important institutional connection for Ripple, the XRP Ledger and XRP as blockchain-based financial services continue to develop.
