Why Does Raydium AMM Matter on Solana?
Raydium AMM is one of the places where Solana token swaps actually happen. Instead of matching a buyer with a seller, it lets you trade against a pool of tokens that other users have deposited.
Those pools are called liquidity pools, and they sit at the center of DeFi. No pool, no easy trade. With one, anyone can swap tokens or earn fees by adding their own.
This guide covers how Raydium AMM works, its pool types, fees, risks and the RAY token. It draws on Raydium's official documentation, checked on 27 October 2026.
What Is Raydium AMM and How Does It Work?
Raydium is a decentralized exchange on Solana. Its automated market maker, or AMM, sets prices and runs swaps through smart contracts. These are programs on the blockchain that run without a middleman.
Raydium AMM is permissionless. You connect a wallet, pick two tokens and trade. Anyone can also create a pool. Theofficial Raydium website shows the live app.
The big difference from a traditional exchange is the order book. A traditional exchange matches bids and asks. A pool doesn't. You trade against its token ratio, so a new token can trade as soon as someone funds a pool.
How Does the Raydium AMM Mechanism Work?
A formula sets prices in a pool, not a person. Say a pool holds SOL and USDC. You buy SOL, so you add USDC and take SOL out. The next SOL costs a bit more.
Most pools use the constant-product formula: x × y = k. The x and y are the two token amounts. The product k stays constant after each trade, before fees.
Try a made-up example. A pool holds 100 token A and 100 token B, so k is 10,000. You buy 10 A. The pool must now hold about 111.1 B. You paid roughly 11.1 B for 10 A, or 1.11 each against a starting 1.00.
What Are the Main Types of Raydium Liquidity Pools?
Raydium runs several pool programs side by side.
Constant Product Market Maker (CPMM)
A pure constant-product pool with no order book. The docs recommend it for new constant-product pools. It supports Token-2022 tokens and gives providers fungible LP tokens.
Raydium AMM v4 Explained
The original design, launched in February 2021. It once paired with the OpenBook order book, but the docs say that link is now deactivated. It charges a single 0.25% fee, and new pools default to CPMM instead.
Concentrated Liquidity Market Maker (CLMM)
Providers choose a price range. Their money earns fees only while the market price stays inside it. Positions are NFTs, so this model needs more active management.
Stablecoin Liquidity Pools
A Stable AMM exists for tokens that trade near the same price, but the docs call it legacy. For correlated pairs, they point to low-fee CLMM tiers such as 0.05%.
How to Swap Tokens Using Raydium on Solana
Connect a Compatible Solana Wallet
Open the app from the official site and check the address. Fake copies are common. Connect a Solana wallet holding some SOL for network fees.
Select the Tokens and Enter the Swap Amount
Choose what you're paying with and what you want. Enter an amount. Check the token address for unfamiliar tokens, since anyone can create a pool.
Review Fees, Slippage and Price Impact
Check the expected output, price impact and slippage tolerance. Slippage tolerance is the largest price move you'll accept before the trade fails.
Confirm the Transaction and Verify It
Approve in your wallet, then find the transaction on a Solana block explorer. Make sure the tokens received match the screen.
How Do Raydium Liquidity Providers Earn Fees?
A liquidity provider, or LP, deposits two tokens into a pool. CPMM pools return fungible LP tokens that represent a share of it.
Every swap pays a fee. For CPMM and CLMM pools, the docs say 84% goes to LPs, 12% to RAY buybacks and 4% to the treasury. For AMM v4, it's 88% and 12%.
In CPMM and v4 pools, fees build up inside the reserves and you realize them on withdrawal. In CLMM pools, fees accrue per position and you claim them.
Some liquidity reserves add farms, which is yield farming in simple terms. Rewards change and aren't guaranteed.
What Fees Does Raydium AMM Charge?
Theofficial fee documentation splits costs into several types.
Fee
Detail
Swap fee
CPMM tiers include 0.01%, 0.25% and 1%. AMM v4 charges 0.25%. CLMM varies by pool
Pool creation
0.15 SOL for CPMM or AMM v4. No separate Raydium fee for CLMM
LaunchLab
1% buy and sell fee before a token graduates
Network
Solana base and priority fees, paid to the network, not Raydium
Priority fees are optional tips that speed up a transaction when the network is busy. A failed transaction can still cost a network fee.
What Are the Benefits of Using Raydium AMM?
Solana-based transactions: Swaps settle on Solana, where network fees are usually small.
Permissionless access: No sign-up is needed to swap or create pools.
Provider opportunities: LPs can earn a share of trading fees, and some pools add farm rewards.
Ecosystem access: One wallet works across the Solana ecosystem, so funds can move between apps.
What Risks Should You Know Before Using Raydium?
Impermanent loss: If token prices move after you deposit, your pool share can end up worth less than simply holding. Fees may offset that, or not.
Low liquidity: Thin pools swing fast, and a modest trade can move the price.
Contract and token risks: Audited code can still have bugs, and an audit isn't a safety guarantee. Raydium AMM also lets anyone create a pool, so scam tokens appear.
Volatility and errors: Prices can swing in minutes. Failed swaps and wrong slippage settings are common. Start small.
Orca and Jupiter often come up in the same conversation, but they don't do the same job. Jupiter is mainly an aggregator. It searches routes across several DEXs instead of running a directly equivalent AMM.

What Is the RAY Token and What Is Its Role?
RAY is Raydium's native token on Solana. TheRAY token documentation lists a maximum supply of 555,000,000 RAY and says the mint authority is disabled.
Users can stake RAY in the app to claim RAY rewards. Part of trading charges also funds buybacks, which use protocol revenue to buy RAY. They don't promise a higher price.
Keep the roles separate. Raydium AMM handles swaps and pools. RAY is a separate token tied to staking and fee flows.
What Is the Future of Raydium AMM in Solana DeFi?
Confirmed first. The docs list CPMM as the default for new constant-product pools, plus CLMM, farms, RAY staking, perpetual futures and the LaunchLab token launch tool.
Now the projections. AMMs may stay a core part of Solana liquidity, since new tokens still need somewhere to trade.
Concentrated liquidity could keep growing. Competition from other DEXs and aggregators may pressure fees and volume. The outcome remains uncertain for Raydium AMM.
Conclusion
Raydium AMM lets people swap tokens and supply liquidity on Solana without an order book. Prices come from pool ratios, and fees reward providers. CPMM, CLMM and legacy AMM v4 pools each fit different needs.
The costs and risks matter just as much. Swap fees, Solana network fees and price impact add up. Impermanent loss, thin pools and fake tokens can hurt providers and traders alike.
Before using Raydium AMM, read the official docs, test with a small amount and verify every token address. The design is clear. Market volatility still isn't.
