Eric Yakes, founder of Bitcoin-focused investment firm Epoch Ventures and author of the book Bitcoin and the Monetary Revolution, has expressed considerable optimism regarding Bitcoin’s (BTC) long-term future. Yakes specifically argued that governments beginning to accumulate Bitcoin could trigger an unprecedented surge in the cryptocurrency market.
Speaking on a podcast, Yakes stated that he doesn’t place much emphasis on technical analysis patterns or predictions based on past cycles when evaluating Bitcoin’s price movements. According to the renowned investor, the key factor determining Bitcoin’s future will be the emergence of new demand sources within the next 5 to 10 years.
Yakes noted that Bitcoin has begun to gain acceptance among institutional investors in recent years, and said that the spot Bitcoin ETFs launched by BlackRock were a significant milestone in this process.
He stated that a large financial institution like BlackRock offering Bitcoin to investors not only provides direct capital inflow but also builds trust among other institutional investors.
“If Bitcoin Reaches $5 Trillion, Everything Could Change”
The most striking part of Yakes’s statements was his assessment of how governments’ approaches to cryptocurrency might change as Bitcoin’s market capitalization grows.
Yakes stated that Bitcoin’s biggest disadvantage compared to gold is that it does not yet have sufficient market capitalization and liquidity, but argued that this situation could change over time.
According to the investor, a rise in Bitcoin’s market capitalization from $2 trillion to $5 trillion could significantly alter the approach of major sovereign wealth funds towards Bitcoin.
Using Saudi Arabia as an example, Yakes said that the growth of the Bitcoin market would make it much more realistic to cash out a $100 billion position if needed.
He suggested that if Bitcoin’s market capitalization reaches $10 trillion, the increased liquidity could make the cryptocurrency a more attractive reserve asset for governments.
Yakes made the following assessment regarding the potential impact on the price of Bitcoin if governments start accumulating it:
“This situation could trigger a massive surge in Bitcoin. I don’t think it will start with a headline. There could be a surge that nobody understands what’s happening. And behind this could be governments that have been quietly accumulating Bitcoin over time.”
“Banks Accepting Bitcoin Could Create a New Wave of Demand”
Yakes stated that another important development that could drive Bitcoin’s growth in the coming years is its integration into the traditional banking system.
The investor noted that Bitcoin-backed loans, in particular, present a significant opportunity for banks, arguing that banks could increase their revenue by adding Bitcoin-backed products to their existing loan portfolios.
According to Yakes’ hypothetical example, if Bitcoin-backed loans yielding 11 percent annual interest reach 20 percent of a bank’s loan portfolio, it has the potential to increase the bank’s net interest margin by approximately 50 percent.
However, the investor acknowledged that Bitcoin’s past high volatility has increased banks’ reservations about the asset. But he said that as the Bitcoin market matures and volatility decreases, this could change perceptions within the banking sector.
ETFs Will Play a Critical Role in the Next 5 Years
According to Yakes, spot Bitcoin ETFs will remain one of the most important tools for institutional adoption over the next five years.
Yakes stated that a large portion of the capital in the traditional financial system moves through existing banking and investment infrastructures, and that integrating Bitcoin into these systems could provide access to very large amounts of capital.
He also stated that in the longer term, he expects Bitcoin to be used not only as an investment vehicle but also as a savings and collateral asset in the digital economy.
Yakes believes that Bitcoin’s monetary adoption could occur in three phases: first as a store of value, then as a medium of exchange, and finally as a unit of account. He notes that this transformation could take decades.
The renowned investor also acknowledged that one of the biggest risks to Bitcoin’s long-term success could be the emergence of a new technology in the future that is unpredictable today and offers superior features to Bitcoin.
