Financial advisor and best-selling personal finance author Ric Edelman recently said that buying Bitcoin (BTC) today is like investing in Amazon.com, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) in 1999.

"Back in 1999, people were arguing over whether to invest in Amazon. Nobody has that argument. Everybody owns it and Bitcoin will have the same trajectory in the future."

The Amazon stock's price barely touched $5 in 1999, but it is currently trading above $250.

While Bitcoin arrived much later in 2009, the cryptocurrency also saw a wild, if volatile, rally over the years. Its price first crossed $500 during a rally in 2013 before crashing back down. It is currently trading near $81,000.

Edelman explains Bitcoin allocation strategy

Edelman appeared for an interview with Bitcoin Magazine on Sep. 17, in which he recalled often being booed off the stage while talking about Bitcoin back in 2013-14. Though Bitcoin "haters" are still there, they no longer have the justification or legitimacy for their arguments, he added.

Investment managers are thinking of the best ways to accommodate Bitcoin in their clients' portfolios, and their tone has changed over the last 2.5 years, he remarked. Note that Bitcoin hit an all-time high (ATH) of $126,080 on Oct. 6, 2025.

In fact, adding Bitcoin to a properly diversified and rebalanced portfolio not only improves the return but also lowers the risk, Edelman claimed. He admitted that Bitcoin is a volatile asset but said its volatility is an opportunity for wealth managers to rebalance the portfolio by buying the dip and selling the top.

The fact that Bitcoin increasingly moves independently of stocks and other traditional assets makes it a valuable addition to a diversified portfolio, he argued his case.

Edelman sticks to $500,000 price target for Bitcoin by 2030

When host Sean Hagan asked Edelman if his Bitcoin price prediction of $500,000 by 2030 has changed, the financial advisor said his target is still the same. He noted that it is actually lower than that of others who have projected $1 million or more for the leading cryptocurrency.

He said his price target depends on basic math.

"If everybody in the world allocates 1% of assets to Bitcoin, that translates to $500,000 price. It's really that simple."

Edelman even went on to say that his prediction could be wrong on two counts. One, Bitcoin's price will be more than $500,000. Two, it will probably hit the target before 2030, he added.
