  • C2FO plans faster invoice settlement using RLUSD.
  • Direct stablecoin redemption and tokenized financing remain in development.

Ripple and BNY are expanding their partnership to bring institutional custody and corporate invoice financing closer to the XRP Ledger. The initiative targets a persistent problem in business payments: transferring funds quickly after financing has been approved, particularly when transactions cross banking systems.

Announced on October 27, the expansion introduces custody support for XRP and Ripple USD (RLUSD)through BNY’s digital asset platform. It also includes plans for direct stablecoin minting and redemption, alongside a proposed trade finance initiative involving working-capital platform C2FO.

The commercial distinction is important. BNY’s expanded custody service is available to eligible institutional clients, while the financing and direct issuance arrangements remain under development. Their success will depend on whether companies can turn rapid blockchain settlement into usable working capital.

C2FO Targets the Delay After Financing Approval

The planned C2FO Instant Pay service addresses the interval between approval of an early invoice payment and the supplier receiving the funds.

C2FO operates an established working-capital marketplace whose Early Pay programs have facilitated more than $250 billion in accelerated payments. That figure reflects its existing business, not transaction volume already processed on the XRP Ledger.

Under the proposed arrangement, participating capital providers would finance approved invoices, with RLUSD used to settle the payments. The original invoice terms would remain unchanged.

The XRP Ledger typically settles transactions within three to five seconds. This could reduce the transfer stage, especially where conventional international payments involve intermediary banks and separate settlement systems.

However, blockchain confirmation is not the same as cash becoming available in a corporate bank account.

A supplier receiving RLUSD must be able to hold, use or redeem the stablecoin. The complete payment process still depends on financial institutions, compliance procedures and access to liquidity.

Traditional payment systems also vary considerably. Domestic real-time networks already offer rapid transfers in certain markets, while international payments can involve additional processing. The relevant comparison is therefore the full payment process rather than blockchain settlement speed alone.

BNY Expands XRP Custody as Direct RLUSD Issuance Takes Shape

BNY now supports institutional custody of XRP and RLUSD through its Digital Asset Custody platform, allowing eligible clients to safeguard, hold and transfer both assets.

The service builds on an existing relationship in which BNY acts as primary reserve custodian for RLUSD and maintains a custody relationship with Ripple Prime.

These functions serve different purposes.

Reserve custody concerns the assets supporting the stablecoin’s dollar backing. Digital asset custody concerns XRP and RLUSD tokens held by institutional customers. Direct minting and redemption would provide another capability, allowing eligible clients to exchange conventional dollars for RLUSD and redeem tokens through BNY.

That final service remains planned, subject to applicable approvals, with no confirmed launch date.

BNY reported $63.4 trillion in assets under custody or administration and $2.2 trillion in assets under management as of September 30, 2026. The latter figure refers to its investment-management business, not cryptocurrency held for customers.

The significance of BNY’s involvement lies in its established institutional relationships and custody infrastructure. Those capabilities could help businesses integrate digital assets into existing treasury operations without relying entirely on cryptocurrency-native service providers.

Ripple and BNY are also exploring the representation of trade finance assets, including accounts receivable, on the XRP Ledger.

Tokenization could improve the recording and transfer of financing interests, potentially allowing additional institutional investors to participate in receivables financing.

However, a digital token must be connected to a legally enforceable financial claim.

Investors need clarity on ownership, assignment rights, servicing responsibilities and recovery procedures if a corporate buyer fails to pay. A blockchain transaction can record a transfer, but it does not independently resolve these legal requirements.

Credit quality also remains central to pricing. An invoice owed by a financially strong multinational may attract different financing terms from one owed by a smaller or less creditworthy buyer.

The potential benefit is therefore operational efficiency and access to capital, rather than the elimination of credit risk.

C2FO provides an existing commercial channel for financing approved invoices, but the companies have not disclosed committed financing volumes, institutional investor participation or completed production transactions for the proposed XRPL-based service.

Does the Partnership Create New Demand for XRP?

The proposed invoice-financing service identifies RLUSD as the settlement asset, while XRP remains the XRP Ledger’s native token.

XRP is used to pay network transaction fees, but those costs are small relative to the value transferred.

Consider an illustrative $1 billion in invoice payments divided into 10,000 transactions averaging $100,000 each.

At a hypothetical fee of 0.00001 XRP per transaction, the total would be:

  • 10,000×0.00001 = 0.1 XRP

In other words, $1 billion in settlement activity would consume only 0.1 XRP in transaction fees under those assumptions.

The calculation is not a forecast of C2FO activity or future network fees. It demonstrates why higher stablecoin settlement volumes do not necessarily generate proportional demand for the ledger’s native asset.

BNY’s custody expansion may make XRP more accessible to institutional customers, but the companies have not disclosed anticipated token holdings or purchase commitments.

Any broader effect on XRP demand would depend on how institutions use the network, manage liquidity and structure their digital asset operations.

The Commercial Test Is Still Ahead

The next stage will be measured by actual institutional use rather than additional infrastructure announcements.

For corporate treasurers, the relevant questions concern financing costs, access to liquidity and whether stablecoin balances can be integrated into existing payment and accounting systems.

A completed C2FO Instant Pay transaction involving a commercial invoice and a participating capital provider would provide an initial operational benchmark. Subsequent disclosures on payment volumes, redemption times and financing costs would allow a more meaningful comparison with conventional arrangements.

BNY’s planned direct RLUSD issuance and redemption service is another development to monitor, particularly its availability to institutional clients and the procedures governing conversion between bank deposits and tokens.

The partnership has already expanded custody access. Its broader financial significance will depend on whether tokenized receivables and stablecoin payments become routine components of corporate working-capital management.
