Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has outlined the scale of the financial activity already connected to Ripple’s expanding business, citing $16 trillion in transactions touched across its ecosystem last year.
Crypto researcher BankXRP highlighted the comments in a tweet focused on Ripple’s transaction volume, the limited share currently settling on-chain, and growing interest from corporate finance executives in blockchain-based infrastructure.
Ripple Reaches $16 Trillion in Transaction Activity
In the interview, Garlinghouse explained that Ripple’s $16 trillion figure comes from the combined activity of two major acquisitions made last year. Ripple acquired Hidden Road, a non-bank prime broker that cleared approximately $3 trillion in transactions, while G-Treasury, a treasury management software company, handled $13 trillion in transaction activity.
Garlinghouse said Ripple now operates these businesses as Ripple Prime and Ripple Treasury. Together, they contributed to the $16 trillion transaction figure, which he compared with Visa’s scale.
He also emphasized that the figure is continuing to grow. According to Garlinghouse, both businesses are having record years, meaning Ripple expects the transaction volume linked to the ecosystem to increase further.
Only 0.1% Currently Settles On-Chain
Garlinghouse identified another significant aspect of the $16 trillion figure. He said approximately 0.1% of those transactions currently settle on-chain in stablecoins, XRP, or other blockchain-based assets.
He calculated that every additional 0.1% moved on-chain would represent approximately $160 billion in transaction volume. Ripple therefore wants to increase the portion of its transaction activity that uses on-chain settlement.
Garlinghouse said blockchain settlement can provide customers with greater efficiency through speed, cost and transaction certainty. He presented this transition as an important part of Ripple’s growth strategy as its existing businesses expand.
CFOs and Treasurers Are Seeking Stablecoin Solutions
Garlinghouse also described a change he has noticed during meetings over the past six months. He said CFOs and treasurers have increasingly approached Ripple because their CEOs are asking about stablecoins and how the technology could improve corporate treasury operations.
According to Garlinghouse, companies hold liquidity across different regions, with some of that capital remaining dormant rather than generating returns. He said these executives are asking Ripple how they can unlock this trapped capital and maximize their liquidity.
For Garlinghouse, this represents increasing interest in practical blockchain applications within established financial operations.
Garlinghouse Emphasizes Utility Over Speculation
The Ripple CEO also addressed the role of utility within the crypto industry. He said the sector needs real use cases to remain sustainable and warned that an ecosystem based primarily on speculation or meme coins cannot maintain long-term value.
BankXRP’s post therefore highlights Garlinghouse’s central message: Ripple already operates at significant transaction scale, while only a small portion of that activity currently uses on-chain settlement.
If Ripple increases that percentage, the resulting transaction volume could reach substantial levels as corporate demand for blockchain-based financial infrastructure continues to develop.
