Ripple has enabled Water.org, a nonprofit co-founded by Matt Damon and Gary White, to reduce cross-border payment fees by as much as 66%, providing new evidence of how blockchain technology is extending beyond cryptocurrency speculation into global humanitarian finance.

Ripple Payments drives efficiency in cross-border philanthropy

In its latest financial operations, Water.org moved more than $3.2 million across four markets using Ripple Payments, the company’s blockchain-based payment solution.

Through this system, settlement times for transfers to Mexico and Brazil have improved significantly, falling from the typical two or three-day timeframe to same-day processing. This enables Water.org to deliver funding to its local lending partners without the delays imposed by traditional banking cutoffs.

The organizations said these improvements help Water.org’s financial partners distribute affordable loans faster for household water and sanitation upgrades, in place of relying solely on donations to support families in need.

Ripple’s October announcement cited up to 66% lower transaction costs and round-the-clock payment processing, with $3.2 million successfully sent through four markets in Latin America.

Ripple’s infrastructure is used to enable instant international transfers, thereby minimizing the friction and cost associated with sending funds through multiple intermediaries.

The collaboration has also directly helped more than one million people gain access to safe water or sanitation financing across the region.

For relief organizations facing challenges moving money across borders, rapid payment tracking is essential as exchange rates and costs fluctuate. To address this, CryptoAppsy users can leverage real-time charts and automatic price alerts to monitor transaction fees, settlement times, and asset values as they respond to updates in Ripple’s cross-border payment network.

Expansion into stablecoin-based funding

Water.org is now expanding its stablecoin-backed operations. The organization has received a $1.25 million grant in RLUSD, Ripple’s US dollar-pegged stablecoin, through the Stablecoin Impact Fund.

This funding will support WaterCredit programs in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Uganda, broadening Water.org’s stablecoin-enabled microfinance initiative beyond Latin America.

The $1.25 million RLUSD grant will help deliver affordable financing in three new countries and is part of a broader $6 million Ripple commitment to financial inclusion over three years.

Ripple and Water.org also plan to implement Wallet-as-a-Service technology to manage digital assets for future projects. Additional distribution channels for RLUSD are in development, including impending Robinhood access and potential invoice settlement integration with C2FO.

Impact for Ripple, RLUSD, and XRP

The recent developments illustrate broader adoption of Ripple’s global payment infrastructure, but they do not necessarily translate into direct demand for XRP, Ripple’s digital asset.

Ripple Payments, RLUSD, and XRP each serve distinct functions within Ripple’s ecosystem. Many transactions, especially those using stablecoins like RLUSD, rely on Ripple’s technology without requiring XRP as the settlement asset.

As institutional use of Ripple’s payment tools and stablecoins grows, observers continue to differentiate between financial activity that uses these instruments and blockchain transaction volume that directly involves XRP.
