Ripple Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa, Reece Merrick, participated in the Dubai Fintech Summit, which took place from November 2 to 3, 2026. Organized as part of Dubai Future Finance Week by the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), the event brought together senior leaders from global financial and technology institutions.

Ripple’s strategic growth in Dubai

Ripple, a San Francisco-based blockchain technology company focused on global payments, has recently strengthened its foothold in the United Arab Emirates. In 2024, Ripple partnered with the DIFC Innovation Hub, an accelerator program designed to promote fintech innovation within DIFC’s jurisdiction. The collaboration aims to support the UAE’s ambitions to become a regional leader in blockchain adoption and digital assets.

By 2026, Ripple advanced its regional strategy by opening its Middle East and Africa (MEA) headquarters within the DIFC. This move signals Ripple’s ongoing commitment to supporting rapid fintech development in Dubai and the broader region.

The DIFC operates as a leading global financial hub for the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. It offers a secure and efficient platform for businesses and financial institutions seeking to access local, regional, and global markets.

Mini dictionary: DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) is a financial free zone in Dubai that hosts financial services firms, tech innovators, and regulatory bodies, offering a business-friendly environment and independent legal system.

Fintech Summit discussion: Scaling digital asset adoption

At the Dubai Fintech Summit, Merrick joined a panel alongside executives from major institutions including BlackRock, Standard Chartered, and Robinhood. The discussion centered on the future of digital assets and the evolving needs of institutional players entering the space.

Representatives on the panel agreed that the debate is no longer about whether institutions will adopt digital assets, but rather about which infrastructure and operational changes are required to support such adoption at scale.

Merrick reflected that the consensus among participants was clear: the industry must focus less on if institutional adoption will happen, and more on what needs to change in current infrastructure to make widespread adoption possible.

Key challenges: 24/7 infrastructure and bridging finance sectors

Among the main points Merrick shared after the event was the pressing need for round-the-clock financial systems. He indicated that the next phase of digital asset markets will depend on settlement and payment infrastructure that functions continuously, rather than being restricted to traditional market hours.

He also highlighted the necessity of closing the gap between traditional finance (TradFi) and decentralized finance (DeFi). According to Merrick, robust institutional infrastructure, secure custody services, and effective risk management will be essential to enable broad-based participation in tokenized markets.

Merrick emphasized: “The next generation requires always-on rails. Markets with ‘opening hours’ just won’t cut it. Scaling tokenized markets requires real bank-grade infrastructure, custody, and risk management.”

Executives across the panel largely echoed these insights, recognizing the shift toward seamless integration of digital assets within global finance and the importance of infrastructure that matches the demands of the growing market.
