  • Ripple became a founding member of the x402 Foundation, supporting an open payment standard for AI agents, APIs, and web applications.
  • Ripple said the XRP Ledger already supports x402, enabling AI agents to transact using XRP and RLUSD over HTTP.
  • The Linux Foundation will oversee x402 through an open governance model backed by 40 technology, finance, and blockchain organizations.

Ripple has joined the newly launched x402 Foundation as a founding member, positioning the XRP Ledger and RLUSD within an open payment standard built for AI agents, APIs, and internet applications. The initiative brings together leading technology, financial, and blockchain companies to develop a common framework for machine-to-machine payments.

The Linux Foundation announced that the x402 Foundation is now operational after Coinbase contributed the x402 protocol to the organization. The protocol enables payment functionality directly through HTTP requests, allowing AI agents and applications to exchange value without relying on separate payment infrastructure.

Ripple is one of 40 founding members participating in the initiative. The list also includes Amazon Web Services, Google, Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Circle, Cloudflare, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Coinbase, and Adyen. Together, the members will guide the protocol through an open governance model designed to encourage industry collaboration.

Jim Zemlin, CEO of the Linux Foundation, said AI agents have become active participants in the global economy but still lack a native and secure way to transact online. He added that the Foundation aims to establish an interoperable payment layer capable of supporting digital commerce across different industries.

Ripple Expands XRP Ledger’s Role in AI Payments

Ripple said the XRP Ledger already supports the x402 protocol, allowing AI agents to complete transactions using XRP and the RLUSD stablecoin. The company said this infrastructure enables automated applications to send payments as seamlessly as they exchange information.

Markus Infanger, Senior Vice President of RippleX at Ripple, said AI agents need payment systems that match the speed and reliability of internet communications. He added that Ripple has built the tools needed to support x402 while helping establish consistent payment standards across the broader ecosystem.

Moreover, the Foundation said developers, cloud providers, financial institutions, and payment companies will all have a voice in the protocol’s future. This governance model aims to prevent vendor lock-in while supporting multiple payment methods, including payment cards, stablecoins, and blockchain-based assets.

Industry Backs Open Payment, Standard

Several founding members outlined how they expect x402 to support AI-driven commerce. Circle said the protocol allows AI agents to make low-cost USDC payments through standard web requests. Meanwhile, Stripe said it plans to help businesses accept payments from AI agents, while Visa emphasized the need for interoperable payment networks as automated commerce expands.

The Foundation also includes organizations such as MoonPay, Fiserv, Polygon Labs, LayerZero Labs, Quant Network, NEAR Foundation, Cardano Foundation, and several other blockchain and financial technology firms. Their participation reflects broad industry support for a common payment standard that can serve both traditional finance and digital assets.

In conclusion, Ripple’s participation in the x402 Foundation strengthens the role of the XRP Ledger and RLUSD in AI-powered payments while supporting the development of an open, interoperable standard for internet-native transactions.
