Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRP from escrow Thursday as October began. But if history serves as a guide, most of it won't stay out for long.

The unlock kicked off Thursday as part of monthly release Ripple carries out at the beginning of every month. Blockchain tracker Whale Alert flagged the activity in a series of posts on X, with the first transaction alone moving 400 million XRP worth roughly $596 million.

Four transactions, one billion tokens

The release came in four separate moves: 400 million XRP valued at about $595.6 million, 200 million XRP worth roughly $297.8 million, 300 million XRP worth around $446.7 million, and 100 million XRP worth about $148.9 million, as shared by Whale Alert.

The combined, the transactions add up to the full 1 billion token unlock.

Despite these numbers, the full billion rarely enters circulation. Ripple has historically returned 700 to 800 million XRP of each monthly unlock back into new escrow contracts, using the remainder for operational needs and ecosystem initiatives.

The first sign of that came quickly. Whale Alert's later post on Thursday showed 300 million XRP re-locked into escrow, neatly fitting the familiar pattern.

Where the supply stands

According to XRPScan data cited in reporting on the unlock, 31.845 billion XRP remains in escrow. That equals roughly 31.8% of total supply.

Circulating supply sits at about 68.1 billion XRP out of a 100 billion token cap, with 14.39 million XRP burned to date.

That's why traders typically watch the 24 hours following the unlock to see exactly how much Ripple sends back to escrow, which determines the real addition to circulating supply rather than the gross headline figure.

Earlier in Sept, the Whale Alert flagged three separate transactions, 500 million, 400 million, and 100 million XRP from Ripple's escrow system.

The move was part of Ripple's long-established monthly escrow release schedule. What is different this time is the size and timing.

The October unlock arrives as XRP shows signs of technical strength. That makes it worth understanding what the unlock does or doesn't mean for investors.
