Ripple has released a new XRPL software upgrade, but fewer than half of the network's nodes have adopted it so far, raising questions about the pace of the rollout and its implications for network consensus.
Ripple unveils a new XRPL upgrade
The XRP Ledger development team published rippled version 3.1.3, the latest server software for nodes operating on the XRPL. The release follows Ripple's broader push to maintain and enhance the ledger's infrastructure, which has included securing full MiCA approval to expand its services across Europe.
XRPL upgrades require validators and node operators to manually install new software versions. Unlike proof-of-work or proof-of-stake chains, the XRPL's federated consensus model depends on a supermajority of trusted validators running compatible software before new amendments can activate. Why the low node-upgrade rate stands out
Fewer than half of the network's active nodes are running the latest version. The gap between a software release and widespread adoption is not unusual for decentralized networks, but the current rate puts any pending amendments in a holding pattern.
For the XRPL, this matters because protocol-level changes require at least 80% of trusted validators to signal support over a continuous two-week period before they go live. Until enough operators upgrade, new features bundled with the release remain dormant.
The immediate focus for XRPL stakeholders is whether validator adoption crosses the 80% threshold needed to activate any amendments included in the 3.1.3 release. Node operators who have not yet upgraded will need to do so before the network can move forward with proposed protocol changes.
Ripple's ongoing partnership announcements and regulatory progress suggest the company is investing in the XRPL ecosystem's long-term growth. Whether that momentum translates into faster node upgrades will determine how quickly the latest technical improvements reach the live network.
