David Schwartz, a prominent figure at Ripple and key architect of the XRP Ledger, has announced his retirement from daily duties at the company while maintaining a significant role on the board of directors. Speaking in a lively discussion on X (formerly known as Twitter), Schwartz clarified that he no longer handles daily executive responsibilities but retains his strategic involvement as a board member and CTO Emeritus.
Defining the Role of CTO Emeritus
The conversation began when a user questioned Schwartz about his current status at Ripple. Schwartz responded by indicating his retirement, emphasizing that he no longer works day-to-day at the company. He further elaborated by explaining his ongoing contribution as a member of Ripple’s Board of Directors and maintaining the honorary title of CTO Emeritus, signifying continued strategic influence without operational duties.
David Schwartz, Ripple’s visionary, asserts, “I am not actively employed by Ripple, yet I remain on the board and keep my title as CTO Emeritus.”
Despite stepping back from daily operations, Schwartz stays connected with his former colleagues. He meets with his previous team twice monthly and occasionally visits Ripple’s offices to catch up with his past coworkers, maintaining a link to his professional roots.
Continued Engagement with XRP Ledger
Schwartz underscores his unwavering commitment to the XRP community by running his own XRP node, contributing data, and exploring new XRP use cases beyond Ripple’s established focus areas. This active involvement illustrates his sustained engagement with the blockchain’s future.
Renowned for his foundational contributions to the XRP Ledger since 2011, Schwartz transitioned from chief cryptographer to CTO in July 2018, eventually embracing the emeritus role at the close of 2025 as he joined Ripple’s leadership board.
Schwartz shares, “I continue my work within the XRP Ledger via my node, consistently disseminating data and researching novel applications for XRP.”
Extending Influence Beyond Ripple
Additionally, Schwartz’s expertise is recognized in his new advisory position at Evernorth, an XRP-focused treasury company. This strategic role underscores his ongoing influence within the crypto industry, despite his retirement from Ripple’s daily functions.
Advancing the Future of XRP Ledger
Schwartz made a public appearance at the Swell event in late October, engaging in a session alongside RippleX’s Engineering Head, Ayo Akinyele. They discussed the developmental trajectory of the XRP Ledger, examining the technologies driving its evolution and the requisite components to support cutting-edge financial applications and on-chain use cases.
These revelations affirm that, although David Schwartz has retired from daily duties, his integral connection with both Ripple and the XRP Ledger ecosystem remains steadfast. His roles on the board, within the technical community, and as a strategic advisor reflect his enduring impact in the crypto landscape, post-retirement.
