Developers advancing the XRP Ledger (XRPL), the public blockchain supporting the XRP digital asset, have released the ninth version of the Smart Escrow Devnet, bringing programmable escrow features closer to launch.
Ninth Smart Escrow Devnet Release
Mayukha Vadari, senior software engineer at RippleX, a division of Ripple that focuses on the development of XRPL infrastructure and tooling, described the release as a notable milestone in the path to production. Vadari, one of the authors behind the Smart Escrows proposal, explained that the team continues to review and test the Smart Escrow framework before rolling it out widely.
Developers experimenting with the Smart Escrow technology will need to update their configurations to accommodate changes introduced in the latest Devnet release.
The ninth release incorporates numerous improvements beneath the surface, including a major change in the Smart Escrow architecture. This update completes the migration of the WebAssembly virtual machine integration from the C++ programming language to Rust.
Mini dictionary: WebAssembly (Wasm) allows code written in various programming languages to run safely and efficiently on multiple platforms, including blockchains. The migration from C++ to Rust is often pursued for enhanced memory safety, performance, and modern tooling.
Vadari highlighted that the new Rust-based framework creates a unified entry point for managing gas accounting, error handling, and system checks. According to the development team, performance has improved by between 30% and 50% for every host function call with this architectural overhaul.
Besides the language migration, the team standardized names for host functions, ledger fields, transaction engine result codes, and execution entry points, making the technology more production-ready.
Programmability on the XRPL keeps moving, said Vadari, emphasizing the ongoing progress in bringing programmable escrows to the platform.
Programmable Escrow: Expanding Use Cases
Currently, standard escrows on the XRPL let users lock funds until a specified time or until cryptographic conditions are met. Smart Escrow introduces a new layer: users can attach a WebAssembly program to an escrow in order to define custom release conditions.
This approach could enable more sophisticated arrangements, such as requiring third-party notary approval, holding funds for compliance verification, or managing complex transactions like real estate purchases and auctions.
In practice, smart escrows could release assets only upon approval, completion of compliance checks, or successful input of external data through an oracle that satisfies predetermined criteria.
The feature set is outlined in the XLS-100 proposal, described as the initial step for bringing deeper programmability to the XRP Ledger and addressing scenarios that go beyond simple escrow mechanics.
