In Brief:
- RippleX engineer Mayukha Vadari warns that artificial intelligence could help attackers identify critical blockchain vulnerabilities by reverse engineering security patches.
- Veria Labs discovered an XRP Ledger vulnerability that could have allowed attackers to create 18.45 trillion XRP through manipulated transactions.
- XRPL developers released an emergency security update while temporarily withholding source code, raising concerns about transparency and open-source development practices.
RippleX engineer Mayukha Vadari has raised concerns about artificial intelligence exposing sensitive security patches before blockchain developers can address critical vulnerabilities.
According to Vadari, AI tools have made it easier for attackers to reverse engineer software updates and identify hidden security weaknesses. The warning follows the disclosure of an XRP Ledger vulnerability that could have created trillions of unauthorized XRP tokens.
In a recent X post, Vadari explained that developers can no longer rely on conventional public releases for critical security fixes. AI capabilities now allow malicious actors to examine patches and identify vulnerabilities before network operators complete necessary upgrades.
The concerns emerged as XRPL developers revealed details of a payment engine flaw that had remained within the network’s code since 2015.

AI Security Concerns Intensify Following Discovery of XRP Ledger Supply Vulnerability
Security researchers at Veria Labs identified the vulnerability on September 21 using Veria AI, an artificial intelligence-based security system. Researchers subsequently submitted their findings through the XRP Ledger bug bounty program on September 22.
According to Veria Labs, attackers could have exploited the flaw to generate approximately 18.45 trillion XRP through a single transaction. That amount exceeds XRP’s original 100 billion token supply by more than 184 times.
The vulnerability involved an integer overflow within the XRP Ledger payment engine, particularly during decentralized exchange transactions involving multiple trading offers.
Attackers could have created hundreds of manipulated offers containing unusually large XRP values to trigger incorrect payment calculations. Consequently, sellers could receive substantial XRP payments while buyers paid only a fraction of the required amount.
The flaw also affected safeguards designed to prevent unauthorized XRP creation, potentially allowing attackers to transfer newly generated tokens.
Researchers estimated that exploitation could have threatened XRP’s approximately $94 billion market capitalization at the time of discovery. Nevertheless, XRPL developers found no evidence that attackers exploited the vulnerability on the public network.
XRPL Emergency Security Update Raises Open-Source Transparency Concerns
Developers released xrpld 3.4.1 on September 25 to address the security weaknesses before disclosing their technical details. The team temporarily withheld the security patch’s source code to prevent attackers from identifying the underlying vulnerability through reverse engineering. This decision attracted criticism over transparency and the network’s commitment to open-source development.
Vadari’s warning highlights the security challenges developers face as AI accelerates vulnerability detection and analysis across blockchain networks. The incident also illustrates why developers may restrict immediate access to sensitive security fixes while network operators deploy protective updates.
