  • Robinhood partnered with the U.S. government to support Trump Accounts for eligible children born between 2025 and 2028.
  • Vlad Tenev argued trading is not gambling, saying speculation is essential to efficient financial markets.
  • Robinhood continues expanding beyond trading with tokenized assets, blockchain services, and broader financial products.

Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev said the company is working with the U.S. government to operate Trump Accounts for children born between 2025 and 2028. In an interview with The New York Times, he also rejected claims that trading should automatically be treated as gambling. According to Tenev, speculation remains an essential part of functioning financial markets.

Robinhood Expands Through Trump Accounts

According to The New York Times, Trump Accounts became available this month under the tax code as 530A accounts. Eligible children receive a $1,000 government contribution into a tax-deferred investment account.

Robinhood helped build the app that parents use to manage the accounts. Tenev said the partnership supports broader access to long-term investing. He also explained how the project developed.

According to Tenev, Altimeter Capital founder Brad Gerstner first suggested the idea before Robinhood's 2021 initial public offering. Later, Tenev attended a White House event announcing the initiative. He said Robinhood offered to deliver the platform under budget and ahead of schedule.

Tenev Rejects Gambling Comparison

As Robinhood expands, Tenev addressed criticism surrounding its trading platform. He said trading should not automatically receive the same label as gambling. According to Tenev, active traders often rely on structured strategies and defined market views.

He added that speculation allows markets to function because participants constantly price future expectations. He also compared today's criticism with earlier reactions to futures markets. According to Tenev, speculation has always remained part of financial markets.

Meanwhile, Robinhood continues expanding into prediction markets. That business has renewed debate over the distinction between trading and betting.

Company Broadens Financial Services

Robinhood continues moving beyond the image created during the 2021 meme-stock surge. Tenev said the company aims to serve customers across every asset class and financial transaction globally.

The brokerage now offers commission-free stock, options and cryptocurrency trading to 27.7 million users. It also expanded into credit cards, tokenized assets and blockchain infrastructure.

According to Tenev, more than 90% of his personal net worth remains invested in Robinhood shares. Separately, he disclosed selling 375,000 shares on July 6 through a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan adopted in September 2025 while retaining more than 48.2 million Class B shares.
