Samsung SDS and Dunamu Eye Stablecoin and AI Payment Infrastructure
Samsung SDS, the IT services arm of Samsung Group, is exploring a strategic partnership with Dunamu, the operator of South Korea's largest crypto exchange @Official_Upbit, to develop stablecoin infrastructure and AI-based payment models. The move signals a deepening of ties between the two companies following a significant equity deal earlier this year.
Samsung Securities, Samsung SDS and Samsung Card approved the acquisition of 1.39 million Dunamu shares, equivalent to a 4% stake, from Kakao affiliates for a combined 612.8 billion won in May 2026.The three affiliates paid the equivalent of about $408 million for the shares.
With that financial relationship now in place, Samsung SDS is moving into the next phase. The company says it is actively refining its business models for digital finance, and CEO Lee Jun-hee has confirmed that internal preparation is already well advanced. The firm has completed end-to-end validation of the full stablecoin process, covering everything from issuance through to final settlement.
Broader Samsung Push into Digital Assets
Samsung SDS plans to combine its artificial intelligence, cloud and security technologies with Dunamu's blockchain operating expertise to expand digital financial infrastructure services for financial institutions. That ambition fits within a wider group-level strategy. Samsung Securities said it planned to work with Dunamu on tokenized securities issuance and digital asset services, while Samsung Card identified potential collaboration on digital asset payments and possible won-backed stablecoins through Samsung's Monimo financial platform.
Industry observers view the recent wave of acquisitions as strategic positioning ahead of potential consortium formation tied to a future won-denominated stablecoin market. South Korea is one of the most active retail crypto markets globally, and regulatory momentum around stablecoins and tokenized securities has been building through 2026.
The Samsung SDS and Dunamu partnership, if formalised, would bring together enterprise-grade IT infrastructure and one of Asia's most established crypto trading platforms, a combination that could give Samsung a credible foothold in the region's fast-moving digital payments landscape.
