A former FBI agent has been indicted for reportedly misappropriating nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency funds from agency-linked wallets. The allegations detail a string of unauthorized transfers made by Patrick Steven Yaroch while employed in an investigative role at the FBI.
How Did the Theft Occur?
Patrick Yaroch, formerly of the FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division, is accused of facilitating cryptocurrency thefts on ten separate occasions from early 2025 until July 2026. These funds were taken from wallets pertinent to FBI cases and redirected into new accounts he controlled. Prosecutors suggest the unauthorized asset transfers netted nearly $1 million, culminating in his arrest.
The court documents further specify charges of interstate transportation and receipt of stolen goods, emphasizing the magnitude and reach of the alleged crimes.
Yaroch’s Interactions with Authorities
During federal inquiry, it was revealed that Yaroch memorized essential security data from FBI systems to complete these transfers. Compounding the gravity of the offense, he reportedly confessed his actions during a self-initiated meeting at FBI headquarters, admitting to the unauthorized transactions of digital currencies.
Evidence seized from Yaroch’s residence included a Trezor wallet, crucial recovery phrases on paper, and a Kraken account with a substantial balance. This latter account featured not only U.S. dollars but also significant holdings of a stablecoin, further implicating him in the complex heist.
Close to $1 million was illicitly transferred by Yaroch.
His Kraken account showed notable balances in both cash and cryptocurrency.
The unauthorized transfers were executed approximately 10 times.
A Trezor hardware wallet was found during the search.
Plans for a family trip to Portugal in September 2026 were unveiled.
Yaroch’s interactions with ChatGPT to seek advice on managing the illicit proceeds and plans for European relocation highlight the premeditated nature of his actions. Authorities have gathered evidence suggesting his preparation for a permanent move with his family, though he denied any plan to relocate under interrogation. His assertions were framed by an insistence on a simple family vacation to Portugal, complicating his case. Prosecutors lean on documented admissions and electronic trails to substantiate the charges, paving the way for the next phase of proceedings.
