@Sei_Labs has published benchmark results for Hermes, its next-generation consensus protocol built for the forthcoming @SeiNetwork Giga launch. The numbers are striking: in laboratory tests, the system processed 100,000 transactions per second with a median finality of 68 milliseconds.

What the Benchmarks Show

The test was conducted with 51 validator replicas distributed across geographical regions under a stable load of 100,000 TPS. Results showed a 95th-percentile finality of 101 milliseconds and, with three validators stopped, 95% of transactions were finalized within 206 milliseconds. The original copy notes that these figures represent 44% to 69% higher speed than comparable high-throughput systems, with the stated goal of eliminating transaction jitter entirely.

Under the hood, Hermes is a Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus protocol that Sei Labs built on prior work including Autobahn and Ambulance. Its design incorporates a shared-prefix concept: rather than requiring every vote within the quorum to be identical, the protocol can finalize the heaviest common prefix among comparable votes, reducing unnecessary view changes and sustaining low latency even when network conditions are not optimal.

Where Hermes Fits in the Giga Roadmap

Giga is a multi-phase overhaul of Sei Network's consensus, execution, and storage layers, aiming for 200,000-plus transactions per second and sub-400 millisecond finality while keeping full EVM compatibility. Hermes is the consensus component planned for a later phase of that rollout. The Sei Giga roadmap lists deploying a testnet for Hermes consensus and subsequently merging that testnet into Sei mainnet as distinct milestones still ahead.

One important caveat worth keeping in mind: the benchmark corresponds to the Giga roadmap and does not reflect current mainnet performance, which is still going through development stages. Lab results and live network conditions rarely match exactly, so the figures are best read as a technical proof-of-concept rather than a live performance guarantee.

Still, the numbers set a clear marker. They demonstrate serious technical progress toward making Sei one of the fastest EVM-compatible chains, which could attract more developers and applications long-term.
