SpaceX stock climbed more than 6% this week after a huge batch of shares became free to trade. The move caught many traders off guard. Most expected a sell-off, not a rally.

SPCX shares, listed on the Nasdaq since SpaceX's June IPO, bounced from a recent low near $105 back above $114. That happened right as 911.5 million shares tied to employees and early investors came off lockup.

This piece walks through what changed, what the chart is saying, and what could happen to SpaceX stock from here. None of this is a promise about where the price goes next.

What happened to SpaceX stock this week

SPCX opened the week under pressure. Shares had fallen hard since the June debut, dropping from highs near $173 down toward the low $105.

Then came the unlock. On the day it kicked in, SPCX gained about 6%, moving from a prior close of $108.27 up into the mid-$110s.

That is not the usual script. Big unlocks often push a stock down, since more sellers can suddenly hit the market. Here, buyers stepped in instead.

Why did SpaceX stock rise despite a massive unlock

Three things seem to have mattered.

First, SpaceX had already dropped a long way before the unlock hit. A lot of bad news was already priced in.

Second, Q2 numbers were strong. Revenue came in around $7.81 billion, ahead of what analysts had penciled in.

Third, not every unlocked share hits the market at once. Anti-flipping terms and staggered vesting mean the full 911 million shares are not all landing on the order book on day one.

SpaceX stock unlock schedule explained

The June IPO released only a small slice of total shares, about 5% of the float. Everything else was locked up.

That lockup is now unwinding in stages, not all at once. Below is how the schedule breaks down, based on the unlock calendar circulating among traders.

SpaceX stock unlock schedule explained

Two things stand out here. The float stays fairly tight through 2026, with steady small unlocks. The real supply test does not come until mid-2027, when Elon Musk's own shares become eligible to sell.

Musk owns a large chunk of SpaceX and controls the bulk of voting power through super-voting stock. Whether he sells any of that stake next year is one of the bigger open questions for long-term holders.

SPCX stock chart: reading the technical picture

The hourly chart tells a clear story. SPCX spent most of July inside a falling channel, making lower highs and lower lows.

In late July and early August, price broke above that channel's upper trendline. That is often called a breakout.

After the breakout, SPCX pushed up toward $126 before pulling back. The pullback found buyers again near $105, roughly where the old channel line now sits as support instead of resistance.

That kind of move- breakout, pullback, hold the line- is a pattern chart watchers often call breakout-retest-continuation. It does not guarantee anything, but it is generally read as a bullish sign if the level holds.

Right now, resistance sits in the $120 to $126 zone. A close above that area on strong volume is the kind of thing chart traders would want to see before getting more confident about a move toward $130 to $135, and possibly $140 if buying pressure keeps up.

On the downside, a break back under $105 would undo a lot of that positive read and open the door to another leg lower.

SpaceX stock price prediction: what could happen next

Nobody can say for certain where SPCX goes from here. What we can do is lay out the levels and events worth watching.

Bull case: SPCX holds above $105, grinds through the $120 to $126 resistance zone on real volume, and continues toward $130 to $140. Strong Starlink and AI-related revenue growth would help this case.

Bear case: More of the unlocked 911 million shares hit the market than buyers can absorb, SPCX slips back under $105, and the stock retests lower ground closer to its 52-week low.SPCX/USDT PRICE CHART

Wall Street analysts, for context, have mostly stayed bullish on the name, with price targets well above current levels, though those targets carry wide ranges and reflect long-term views rather than near-term calls.

The next scheduled catalyst is the small time-based unlock in late August, followed by more in September and October.

None of these single events is as large as the Q3 unlock stages expected in November, which look like the bigger test for the stock this year.
