The U.S. spot Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) experienced a return of net inflows after a one-day hiatus. However, the limited scale of these inflows and the prevailing bearish sentiment in the derivatives market indicate underlying investor caution. Concerns arise as stronger-than-expected U.S. inflation data stokes fears of renewed Federal Reserve interest rate hikes, adding pressure to the market.
BlackRock Dominates Limited ETF Inflows
According to SoSoValue data, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a net inflow of $5.06 million on October 15. This came after the previous day’s substantial outflow of $261.46 million from the funds, indicating a shift back to positive flows, albeit insufficient to counterbalance the earlier withdrawal.
Among the funds, BlackRock’s IBIT was the sole product registering net inflows, attracting $16.79 million. Conversely, Grayscale’s Bitcoin Mini Trust experienced a net outflow of $7.64 million, and Invesco Galaxy’s BTCO fund saw $4.09 million withdrawn.
Other products, including Fidelity’s FBTC and Ark 21Shares’ ARKB funds, did not report any net changes in their inflows or outflows.
In stark contrast to the limited ETF recovery, a bearish outlook has intensified in the Bitcoin derivatives market. CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost highlighted a decline in the funding rate for Bitcoin perpetual futures on Binance to -0.0073%. This drop in funding rates signals a notable downward trend across the broader derivatives market.
Funding rates serve to tether futures prices to spot prices through payments between investors. A negative rate indicates that those betting on price declines are compensating the bullish positions. The persistence of short positions, despite these costs, underscores the strength of bearish expectations.
Critical Price Levels: $80,000 and $74,000 for Bitcoin
The prevailing pessimism in the market has been driven by unexpectedly high U.S. consumer and producer inflation figures, increasing speculation about potential Fed rate hikes. Additionally, Bitcoin’s abrupt retreat after recently surpassing $87,000 has reinforced investor caution.
However, Darkfost emphasizes that the accumulation of bearish positions does not guarantee continued price declines. Historically, such scenarios have often preceded trend reversals. He suggests that the intensified bearish sentiment could pave the way for a rebound.
The sustainability of such a rebound remains uncertain. Darkfost points to $80,000 and $74,000 as pivotal support levels, noting that investors should monitor Bitcoin’s behavior around these price points rather than solely relying on funding rates to guide their decisions.
