Key Insights:

  • Stablecoin news shows 94% of Argentina’s peso crypto trading volume goes to stablecoins.
  • Crypto app downloads in Argentina jumped 93% year-over-year during 2024.
  • Digital dollars traded at roughly a 4% premium to official dollars in August 2026.

Stablecoin news from Argentina shows how deeply digital dollars have entered the country’s peso-based crypto market. Artemis data cited by a16z crypto shows stablecoins capture 94% of peso-denominated crypto trading volume.

That represents the highest share among major fiat currencies tracked by the data provider. As a result, converting pesos into crypto increasingly means moving funds into dollar-linked tokens.

The shift extends beyond trading activity. Around one in five Argentines now uses cryptocurrency, according to a16z crypto’s late-August report. Meanwhile, downloads for Argentina’s 15 largest crypto applications increased by 93% year-over-year during 2024.

Lemon downloads also rose across every quarter covered by a16z, even as inflation slowly declined.

Together, those figures show a continued crypto activity during a changing economic environment. However, the strongest concentration remains in dollar-pegged assets. That makes Argentina’s stablecoin activity key within the country’s broader crypto trading market.

Stablecoin News Shows Strong Digital-Dollar Demand

Argentina has a long history of households saving in U.S. dollars rather than relying entirely on pesos. That behavior became harder after currency controls returned in 2019. Individuals were eventually limited to $200 in official monthly dollar purchases.

Additional eligibility requirements also blocked some residents from accessing dollars through official channels.

Stablecoin news provided another route to dollar exposure. Users could purchase USDT or USDC through exchanges and peer-to-peer markets. They could then hold the tokens, transfer them between wallets, or use them for international payments. Unlike official banking channels, those crypto markets also operated around the clock.

Still, the 94% figure requires an important distinction. It measures peso-denominated crypto trading volume rather than the total value of crypto assets held by Argentines. Lemon’s 2024 report clearly shows that difference.

Bitcoin represented more than 36% of Argentine assets held through Lemon. Stablecoins accounted for roughly 27%, while Argentine Pesos (ARS) represented another 18%. The remaining 19% of assets under custody consists of other altcoins. Therefore, trading flows show stronger dollar conversion than longer-term wallet balances.

Inflation Falls While Crypto Activity Continues

The growth in digital-dollar usage also expanded during an unusual inflation cycle. Monthly inflation topped 25.5% in Dec. 2023. The annual inflation later surged to 289% in April 2024. However, the data on stablecoin news does not show a direct causal relationship.

a16z indexed contractor USDC payments and inflation against their January 2024 levels. The chart did not reveal the absolute percentage of contractors receiving USDC.

By July 2026, both indexed measures had dropped to about one-fifth of their respective peaks. Meanwhile, monthly inflation fell to 2.1% in July from 1.9% in June. Annual inflation stood at 33.8%, according to Argentina’s central bank.

Crypto usage did not drop alongside that decline. Lemon downloads continued rising throughout the quarters included in a16z’s comparison.

Currency Reforms Narrow Stablecoin Premiums

The market changed again when Argentina loosened foreign-exchange restrictions. The central bank removed limits on individual foreign-currency purchases on April 11, 2025.

Following the reform, individuals purchased $2.25 billion in foreign assets during April 2025. The changes also narrowed differences between official dollars and alternative dollar markets.

Before the reforms, official and parallel exchange rates had diverged by more than 100% at times during 2023. Stablecoins were frequently traded at prices closer to parallel-market levels while official dollar access remained restricted.

By August 28, 2026, that gap had narrowed considerably. a16z estimated that a digital dollar costs about 4% more than an official-market dollar.

Even with easier official access, stablecoins still account for most peso-based crypto trading volume. However, they carry risks distinct from those of physical dollars and regulated bank deposits.
